GTA 6 and Xbox Game Pass: Don’t Expect a Day-One Drop

If your entire Grand Theft Auto VI strategy rested on a Game Pass subscription, here’s the bad news: the game will not be in the Xbox Game Pass library when it launches. PC players don’t get a workaround either.

Anyone counting on a monthly fee to carry them into Los Santos instead of dropping $600 on a console will need a new plan.

Launch is only a handful of months away, and pre-orders are $80. If your money isn’t down yet, what exactly is the holdup?

Someday, sure. Anytime soon, unlikely.

Does GTA 6 eventually turn up in the Game Pass catalog? Odds are good — earlier entries in the series have made their way onto the subscription, so the precedent exists.

The catch is that “eventually” is carrying an enormous amount of weight there. The wait could stretch on.

One more detail belongs in the calculation: Xbox Game Pass is rolling out hard monthly caps on cloud gaming in November — the very month GTA 6 arrives.

What $22.99 a month actually buys you

Game Pass is a monthly service that pairs online console multiplayer with a rotating catalog of games, and depending on the tier you pick, that catalog runs genuinely deep. Game Pass Ultimate, at $22.99 per month, opens up over 500 titles along with a handful of launch-day releases, and no Xbox console is required to use it.

That said, the service doesn’t catch everything. A lot of big games do arrive sooner or later — just rarely on release day.

Take-Two’s chief executive spelled this out years back

Strauss Zelnick, who runs Take-Two — the parent company of GTA developer Rockstar Games — set out the publisher’s stance on subscription platforms at a GamesIndustry.biz live event back in 2022.

“We’ve supported various subscription services and we’re happy to do so,” Zelnick said at the time. “Our scepticism has been around making frontline console products available day and date with subscription. That doesn’t make any sense to us, because economically speaking, we don’t think consumers are prepared to pay for that. And we can’t afford to turn our business upside down in a way that doesn’t make sense economically. There always has to be an intersection between what the consumer wants and what the publisher is able to do. And you know, it doesn’t make sense to do that for our properties.”

Read that again — it isn’t hedging. It’s a publisher explaining that the numbers simply don’t add up.

Look at what happened with GTA 5 — it’s sobering

Xbox Game Pass has hosted Grand Theft Auto V on multiple occasions across the years, with runs in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025, each one typically lasting a few months before the game was rotated out.

The latest of those runs wrapped up on April 15, 2026.

Now for the detail that should keep expectations grounded: GTA 5 shipped in 2013, and more than six and a half years passed before it first showed up on Game Pass.

Should you brace for a nearly seven-year wait on GTA 6? Nobody can say.

The short-term picture, though, is settled. Playing GTA 6 at launch later this year means buying a copy and running it on an Xbox or PlayStation console.
