Two data center contracts in the space of two weeks, adding up to $80 billion in commitments. That is Anthropic's position as it moves toward a planned IPO, and the newest piece of the puzzle is a $35 billion cloud computing agreement with Lambda, the Nvidia-backed cloud provider.
Reuters broke news of the arrangement, attributing it to an anonymous source. None of the companies involved were willing to comment.
Look past the dollar figure and the more revealing number is 350 megawatts. That is the approximate capacity of the facility under construction in Nueces County, Texas, and it signals what Anthropic expects demand for Claude and Claude Code to look like across the next several years.
The crypto miner turned landlord
The site is being developed by Hut 8. The name may be familiar because Hut 8 was once a cryptocurrency miner, and these days its business is erecting buildings packed with other companies’ accelerators.
Back in July, the company disclosed a 15-year lease with a client it did not name. Run the timeline and the identity of that unnamed client stops being much of a mystery.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the lease on the data center itself is held by Nvidia. So the chip supplier is the leaseholder, a company in its portfolio is selling the cloud capacity, and a former bitcoin miner is doing the construction. Trace the money through this deal and it circles back on itself more than once.
$45 billion last week, $35 billion this week
The Lambda contract arrives only days after Anthropic unveiled a $45 billion deal with Nscale covering a data center in West Virginia. Two distinct multibillion-dollar capacity commitments within a single month, each pitched as a response to growth in Claude usage and in Claude Code, the company’s coding tool.
Committing $80 billion of compute this quickly in the run-up to an IPO says something about anticipated demand rather than present demand. Anthropic is purchasing capacity it does not yet require, wagering that it eventually will.
Weighing against all of this: none of it has been confirmed by the parties themselves. A single anonymous source is behind the Lambda figure. The lease detail traces to a different report. And Hut 8’s July announcement named no one.
What to watch instead of the headline number
Ignore the billions and follow the megawatts. The binding constraint on AI buildouts at the moment is power, not capital, and 350 megawatts in Nueces County is something concrete that can be checked. Construction timelines slip. Interconnection queues are a genuine obstacle. Progress reports from Hut 8 on the Texas site will say far more about whether Anthropic can actually serve the demand it is paying for than any contract value could.
