Anthropic is preparing to ask investors to believe in a market it values at north of $30 trillion annually. According to the Wall Street Journal, that is the total addressable market number the company is expected to put in front of backers ahead of its planned IPO. Arriving at it requires tallying up every task an AI model might one day handle.
Worth pausing on what TAM actually means. It is the yearly revenue a business would record if it captured 100 percent of its market, every customer and every dollar, with no rivals in sight. No company ever captures 100 percent of anything. What the figure does is establish the ceiling investors are being asked to picture.
And $30 trillion edges past a benchmark that is only three months old.
SpaceX called $28.5 trillion the biggest ever. Anthropic just went bigger.
Back in May, SpaceX pegged its own TAM at $28.5 trillion, calling it the “largest actionable TAM in the history of mankind.” Anthropic’s number is larger still. Two companies, a single quarter apart, each laying claim to a piece of the economy bigger than the output of most continents.
Public filings offer the sharpest reality check. FactSet data shows the 191 technology companies in the S&P 1500 generated $2.4 trillion in combined revenue last year. That is the whole of listed American tech, Apple and Microsoft and Nvidia included, coming in at roughly one-thirteenth of what Anthropic claims its market could be worth.
There is a case that the gap holds up if AI eats into labor costs rather than software budgets. That is the unstated argument. It is also the piece that cannot be verified until it actually happens.
The actual revenue numbers are more interesting than the projection
Anthropic doubled its revenue in the second quarter to $11.6 billion. That is genuine money flowing through a genuine business, and it is the most persuasive item in the pitch deck.
By 2028, the company is projecting revenue somewhere in the region of $190 billion to $200 billion. Place that beside the TAM and Anthropic’s preferred framing emerges: even the bullish 2028 forecast amounts to well under one percent of the theoretical market. Plenty of headroom, the argument goes.
Place it beside the $11.6 billion quarter instead, and the scale of the ask comes into focus. Traveling from that figure to $200 billion inside roughly two years demands compounding with virtually no precedent outside of AI’s own recent run.
What the IPO is actually asking for
The company is targeting a valuation near $2 trillion and looking to raise as much as $100 billion. A September or October listing is possible.
At $2 trillion, Anthropic would rank among the world’s biggest companies from its first day of trading. The $100 billion raise reveals where the money is headed: compute, on a scale that only adds up if you accept the premise of the TAM slide.
Pay attention to the hedges in the reporting, because they carry weight. The company is expected to present the figure. It could go public in September or October. Nothing here has been filed and finalized.
How to read the number when you see it
Read the $30 trillion as ambition rather than prediction. It is an assertion about what AI could eventually do to the price of human labor, packaged in addressable-market language because that is the format investors are used to seeing.
The numbers that deserve tracking are the ones tied to specific quarters. Anthropic doubled revenue to $11.6 billion in Q2. Should the following quarter deliver anything comparable, the 2028 range stops looking quite so far-fetched. Should it not, the $30 trillion slide becomes the sole support for a $2 trillion valuation, and slides do not support much.
Keep an eye on the September and October window, and on the S-1 whenever it arrives. Revenue disclosures inside a filing carry legal weight. A TAM estimate carries none.
