The world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange Binance has collaborated with SS Lazio to bring NFT tickets – all the home matches at Stadio Olimpico will now have NFT tickets.
Binance and Società Sportiva Lazio made this announcement following the UEFA Champions League tickets fiasco. There were counterfeit tickets being sold that caused chaos, so Binance came up with the solution – NFT Tickets!
The exchange and SS Lazio – a Rome-based Serie A football club – are making this a reality as the 2022-23 season will feature this new tech.
Binance is proud of this solution as it will prevent disorder in sporting events and solve the issue of fake tickets. Apart from access to the match, NFT tickets will also have features such as exclusive discounts, crypto giveaways, and other fan experiences with the Rome-based club.
Marco Canigiani, Marketing Director at S. S. Lazio, stated that current ticket holders could claim their NFT tickets – it will be free. They can then use the non-fungible to enter the stadium and benefit from all the perks that come with the digital ones.
“Our fans who explore this new technology will enjoy discounts for Europa League matches and online merchandise purchases,” said Canigiani.
Another Binance executive Zoe Wei said that introducing NFTs to football in such a way would showcase a different use case of this new tech. Football in the future can be integrated into Web3 – it will expand the technology into the broader entertainment industry.
The UCL Fake Tickets Fiasco
The UEFA Champions League in May got affected as the Final in Paris (Stadio de France) got affected due to fake tickets. Right after the final, the European football association took notice of the problem caused by traditional tickets and talked with Web3 experts on how blockchain can solve this problem.
Binance, through its Fan Token platform, has been looking to fill the gap between sports and web3. As the football club was looking for a solution, Binance just gave them one with a low-carbon zero paper solution – NFT Tickets. The partnership with Lazio is the fourth after partnerships with Santos FC, FC Porto, and the BWT Alpine F1 racing team.
