Dragon Ball Z wrapped up its run ages ago. The franchise never followed it out the door.
Instead it relocated to video games and settled in, spanning everything from the Dragon Ball Xenoverse fighters to the RPG Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.
That leads to the free-to-play side of the family, and one title that is about to stop resembling the thing players originally signed up for.
The overhaul nobody asked for
Over the last year, Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra built a genuine following. It collected plenty of complaints along the way too. Developer GANBARION and publisher Bandai Namco have now lined up an overhaul that will permanently reshape the experience.
Word arrived this week via an announcement video posted to YouTube, supported by a developer letter on the official Gekishin Squadra site laying out the details.
According to that letter, newcomers to the game as it stands frequently run into “lopsided matches and a high barrier to competitive play,” a consequence of its “strategic depth and knowledge-based mechanics” that risks souring the experience.
Top-down is going away
And here is the detail with the most weight behind it: the camera is being replaced. Top-down gameplay is out, third-person is in.
Calling that a tweak would be generous. It is a separate game carrying the old title.
Beyond the camera, the rules are being retuned to push action-packed gameplay to the front. The role system gets simplified, letting players simply choose whichever characters appeal to them. Customization is being broadened and given a far more visible role.
All of it pulls in one direction, and that direction is downward. Drop the barrier, widen the entrance, and hope a crowd shows up.
The developers know how this sounds
Give the team this much: they aren’t pretending the announcement will go down smoothly. They admit some fans may not welcome the news, and insist the call wasn’t “made lightly.”
They go further, granting that “there may be potential ramifications.”
That is measured phrasing from a company that clearly understands the mood.
Social media did not take it well
The backlash has been broad. What stands out is the source of it: most of the complaints are coming from committed players who enjoy the game precisely as it exists today.
Their case is simple enough. The overhaul courts an audience that might never turn up, and it does so by sacrificing the audience already there.
The logic has a gap that’s difficult to talk past. Lowering the barrier to entry pays off only if the people who once bounced off ever hear that anything changed. In the meantime, the players who stuck around now have an obvious reason to walk.
The live-service problem, again
Call it the standing tax on games built around constant updates. Over time they frequently morph into something entirely unlike what drew fans in at the start.
You commit to one particular product. Then that product gets patched away beneath you, almost always with growth cited as the reason.
If you love Gekishin Squadra the way it currently plays, this overhaul closes the book on an era. Full stop.
Is there a way out
Possibly a little. The developers say they’ll be listening to community feedback, which leaves room for the changes to be dialed back before launch.
Expecting the plan to be scrapped outright is another matter. At this stage, Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra escaping a radical overhaul of some description looks improbable.
The build that fans are currently rallying around comes with a deadline attached, and that deadline is the end of the year.
Enjoy it while it’s still the game you fell for.
