In Brief:

  • On Oct. 5, Errata Studio put out a free Steam demo of Primal Tactica, a single-player roguelike autobattler that uses licensed Illuvium ILV $4.09 ▲ +3.8% IP.
  • There are no web3 features in the game. Its full version is slated for Early Access in Q4 2026.
  • According to Illuvium co-founder Kieran Warwick, most of the game’s revenue goes to Illuvium. The title is one of four products the studio said would launch this year, as it also cut wages to stretch its runway.

A free Primal Tactica demo is now available on Steam from Errata Studio. The roguelike autobattler features creatures and IP licensed from Illuvium.

The demo launched on Oct. 5. In a post on X, the game’s account described it as “Pokémon meets TFT and Slay the Spire.”

The studio’s post urged players to “Recruit and evolve your Primals, stack synergies and build a game-breaking team,” adding: “Enjoy it? Wishlist the main game!”

Illuvium signs off

Illuvium shared the launch on its own account and stressed that Errata developed the game independently.

“Familiar creatures. A whole new challenge,” read Illuvium’s post. “Build your Primals, stack synergies, discover powerful Relics and find game-breaking combinations.”

A week earlier, Illuvium had teased the demo and called Primal Tactica “a single-player roguelike autobattler built with licensed Illuvium IP.” It pointed players to the game’s Discord to register for playtests.

Neither Steam page mentions Illuvium. Errata Studio Ltd appears as both the developer and the publisher.

What’s in the game

Players build a roster from more than 200 Primals, rolling and evolving them, layering their synergies and kitting them out with Relics and Augments. The team is then positioned for turn-based battles that play out automatically.

Combining three identical Primals evolves the unit into a more powerful form. Between battles, players chart a course across a branching map, weighing safer routes against paths defended by tougher foes.

According to the Steam listing, the game will include more than 50 Relics with run-altering, team-wide effects and more than 50 Augments that modify individual Primals’ skills, stats and effects. The studio claims runs can yield “thousands of possible builds.”

The demo runs only on Windows, is single-player and supports six languages. The full game’s page lists 10 languages, among them Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese.

Early Access in Q4

The full release is tagged “Coming Soon To Early Access” with a Q4 2026 window. Errata expects Early Access to last between six months and a year, and the listing notes the price will rise at full launch.

The store page also includes an AI disclosure. Errata stated that all Primal designs are hand-crafted, though some external 2D assets may use generative AI.

The licensing deal

Primal Tactica stems from an arrangement Warwick first outlined in February. The head designer of Illuvium Arena (official site) asked to take the IP and release a version on Steam stripped of the web3 elements, with Illuvium retaining most of the revenue after platform fees.

Warwick said in an Aug. 21 update that the build was close to done and would make its debut at Steam Next Fest in October.

That same update listed Primal Tactica among four products due out this year, alongside a Celebrations collection for Illuvium Beyond, Beyond Chaos and Loadout.

It was paired with a fresh round of cost-cutting. Warwick said six months of reductions plus an additional wage cut had brought operating runway back to more than 12 months. The Overworld MMO now stands as the studio’s main remaining bet, and he did not provide a release date for it.

In February’s post, Overworld had been targeted for December 2026.

Warwick didn’t mince words about where the money from the Steam spinoff ends up.

“Illuvium receives the lion’s share of the revenue,” Warwick said.
