Tuesday, August 18 is patch day. Ahead of it, Bethesda Game Studios has one request: boot up Fallout 4 and get your load order saved.

This isn’t fine print tucked into a changelog. The studio put it out publicly on its official Twitter/X account — and anyone who has spent time in this game’s modding community can guess the reason.

The full text of the post:

“On Tuesday, August 18th, a patch will be coming to Fallout 4 focusing on general Creations improvements. As a precaution, prior to these updates we encourage players to log into your game save if you haven’t done so in a while or manually save your load order. Once your load order is saved, you’ll be able to re-download your entire Creations list at once when the update is live. Additionally, we are also working on a Skyrim update with details to come soon.”

The caution is earned, not imagined

Think back to how the Anniversary Edition launch went. Load orders were mangled, mods stopped functioning, and a number of players found their save files unusable afterward. That patch reshuffled everything without checking in first.

So when the studio says to log in and lock things down beforehand, it’s worth doing. The payoff is simple enough: once the order is stored, your entire Creations list can be re-downloaded in a single pass after the update goes live.

It’s the Skyrim mention that should raise eyebrows

Tacked onto the end of the announcement is the part with bigger implications. Skyrim has gone untouched in any major way for years, and in that calm stretch modders have assembled lists stretching into the thousands of entries.

Builds like that aren’t a few months’ work — they’re the product of years. Players have constructed their ideal version of Skyrim one plugin at a time, and a new patch is precisely the sort of event that can rip straight through it.

What the Skyrim update actually contains hasn’t been revealed yet. Take this as your early warning.

What’s keeping this game alive in 2026

The absence of a follow-up entry in the series remains a real sore point. Even so, consider what Fallout 4 has pulled off in the meantime. Ports to additional platforms and multiple editions kept it in circulation, and Bethesda has stayed reliable about bringing it up to speed with current hardware.

Beyond that, it comes down to a fanbase attached enough to the franchise that they’re still logging in after all these years. Fresh content has come from the community by way of the Creation Club, a system that still draws criticism over its approach to monetization. That hasn’t appeared to deter anyone.

What’s genuinely on the horizon

Fallout 5 remains years away. Arriving considerably sooner are the remasters and remakes of Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3, which at least offer something to occupy players while the franchise sorts out its direction.

For now, though: today is Monday. Tomorrow is patch day. Go save that load order.
