The last numbered Grand Theft Auto came out a little over thirteen years ago, and the next one is nearly here. Grand Theft Auto 6 launches worldwide on November 19, 2026, which puts it in the thick of the holiday shopping season.

The stakes are familiar. GTA 5 was a huge hit, so GTA 6 is likely to be the biggest game launch of the decade, and it could also end up as the most expensive game ever made. A recent South Park episode even mentioned it, which is about as mainstream as a video game gets.

Planning to play on day one? This is what you need to know.

Story mode starts at midnight

GTA 6 has been delayed a couple of times already. With launch this close, there’s no sign of another slip. Digital pre-order customers can start playing at midnight local time on November 19.

There’s a catch, though. At launch you only get single-player. The story mode comes first, so don’t book an online multiplayer night with your crew for that opening week.

The game takes place in Leonida, a fictional take on Florida that you can roam freely. Vice City sits inside it, which will make Rockstar fans very happy.

PS4 owners are out of luck

At launch, GTA 6 runs only on current-generation hardware: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Lots of modern games still release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but GTA 6 skips both because its world and systems demand so much from the hardware.

On PC, the wait is longer. A PC version is expected later, which is how Rockstar usually does it, but the developer hasn’t named a date. Rumors point to the first three months of 2027. Nothing confirms that, so it’s a guess for now. Players who hold out for PC should also expect steep system requirements.

Editions, prices and a disc-free box

GTA 6 costs a little more than most new releases. The editions break down like this.

The Standard Edition costs $79.99 (so, $80). It has the complete base game and the full single-player campaign, and you can buy it digitally or at physical retailers.

The Ultimate Edition is $99.99 and is available only on digital platforms. On top of the full game, you get bonus cosmetics, in-game vehicles and property vouchers for online play.

The third option is the odd one. The $399.99 Collector’s bundle, officially named “Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection,” comes without a game code. Instead it’s a stack of physical collectibles, including a Macca the Gator figure, Oakley sunglasses and a snapback hat, among other items. So that’s four hundred dollars on gator merch, and you still need to buy the game separately.

If you’re buying a physical copy, note that there’s no disc in the box. You get a digital code to redeem on your console’s store.

Pre-order bonus

Pre-order before November 19 and you’ll receive the Vintage Vice City pack. It includes retro-styled Vice City cosmetics, an exclusive car (the ’55 Vapid Stanier) and a free month of GTA+.

Make room on your drive

Rockstar still hasn’t confirmed an official file size. Developers normally share that before launch, so expect it ahead of release day.

According to a recent leak, the PlayStation 5 version will take up a huge 210GB. That would be twice the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s previous game. It’s a leak and not an official figure, so don’t count on it.

For comparison, the base PlayStation 5 comes with an 825GB drive, and once the system software is accounted for, about 670GB is left to use. Leak aside, this is the largest GTA so far, with all of Leonida built from high-end assets and physics, so 150GB or more is a sensible estimate.

Slow connection? Pre-loading will help. It starts a week ahead of launch, on November 12, 2026. If you buy digitally and have automatic downloads switched on, your console should begin downloading the game as soon as pre-loading opens. Physical pre-order customers have to wait for the box to arrive. If it arrives early, you should be able to redeem the code and download the game before launch.

No GTA Online at launch

GTA Online was one of the biggest successes of GTA 5, and Rockstar plans to carry it over into GTA 6. It won’t be there on day one. GTA 6 Online has no release date, much like the PC version, though most people expect it sometime in 2027.

Rated for adults

Every GTA has been aimed at adults, and this one follows suit. The Entertainment Software Rating Board, which handles game ratings in the U.S., rated it M for Mature (17+).

“Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also includes In-Game Purchases,” the ESRB said.

For households where kids share the console, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S both have parental controls that can help. Both let you block games by age rating, require approval before in-game purchases go through and limit online voice and text chat. Each platform has online parental control help pages that explain the settings step by step.

That gives you time to set the house rules before November 19, while the (possibly) 210GB download ticks along in the next room.
