HYTOPIA releases WORLDS alpha

The public browser alpha of WORLDS is now live from HYTOPIA, and it brings the studio back to the concept it started with in NFT Worlds. The game is playable at worldsalpha.com.

“This is a return to our roots,” the team wrote. HYTOPIA first set out to build a platform for other people’s games. It went back to working on its own project after admitting that plan hadn’t worked.

WORLDS is an RPG about exploring and crafting. Players build items and store them at home, head out on expeditions and collect resources. A guide and a caravan give access to different expeditions, each with its own level of risk and reward.

The alpha also deals with how the game plays in practice. It spells out the penalties for leaving an expedition early and does a better job of handling disconnects and party interactions.

Exploration and crafting systems

According to the patch notes, the environments go past standard block structures and include caves, underwater areas and ancient ruins. Some treasure is locked, and players have to beat enemies or clear challenges to get it.

Mining, crafting and exploration are core skills. Players use different crafting stations to repair and upgrade gear, and they can get around with gliders and diving gear. Combat offers a spread of equipment, with foes ranging from creatures to tough bosses.

Community and multiplayer elements

On expeditions, players can meet travelers who ask for help. Those travelers may move into the player’s home and hand over resources every day. Up to four players can team up, visit each other’s homes and explore together.

The alpha is still being built, and the team warns that player progress will be reset at some point, most likely when the game moves to public beta. Early testers may also earn a whitelist spot for a possible future free mint.
