In Brief:
- Arena 1.18.3 is out, and Hyper now scales along separate lines for Fighter, Bulwark, Empath/Psion and Rogue.
- Physical resistance comes from Earth Hyper, energy resistance from Air, and maximum health from Bulwark. Composite chips have been deleted and composites sit under a cap of three.
- It’s a U-turn on a decision made back in update 1.8.0, which had scrapped class-specific Hyper bonuses and swapped in one shared effect.
Roughly a year after stripping it out, Illuvium has put class-specific Hyper scaling back into the game with the launch of Arena 1.18.3.
According to the studio’s release announcement, the new build gives Fighter, Bulwark, Empath/Psion and Rogue their own distinct scaling. Physical resistance is fed by Earth Hyper. Energy resistance is fed by Air. Maximum health is fed by Bulwark.
Illuvium Arena (official site) 1.18.3 is live.
Hyper finally carries class identity: Fighter, Bulwark, Empath/Psion, Rogue each scale differently.
Earth → Physical Resist.
Air → Energy Resist.
Bulwark → Max Health.
Composites capped at 3.

Alongside that, the update limits composites to three and does away with composite chips entirely.
What the reversal undoes
Class-specific Hyper bonuses were cut in update 1.8.0 and replaced by a single effect that applied universally. Synergies were reworked in that same patch too, with primary synergies empowering every ally and composite synergies handing out special abilities.
Because Hyper builds up when an Illuvial faces down an enemy whose affinity it counters, it functions as a positioning mechanic instead of a straightforward damage multiplier. Once 1.8.0 flattened the payoff, a Hyper Psion and a Hyper Bulwark walked away with identical rewards for winning identical matchups.
Version 1.18.3 pulls them apart once more.
The simplification pass, partly walked back
Composites have come up for revision again and again. Patch 1.3.2 saw Illuvium shift complexity away from base synergies and onto composites, doubling composite power to push their impact toward the end game. Behemoth and Templar were then toned down in update 1.9.0, after each had turned into an all-but-automatic Imprint pick.
Update 1.17.0.t pushed harder still, stripping the max threshold effect from composite affinities and classes while fixing synergy thresholds at 2/3/4/5 for every primary affinity and class. Simplicity and a crisper rock-paper-scissors dynamic were the declared aims. Hyper was also woven directly into synergy design in that patch, with synergy bonuses brought in line with the affinity counter relationships Hyper was already rewarding.
1.18.3’s composite cap keeps that pruning going. Its Hyper change does the opposite.
Cadence and context
Arena builds have been landing at a brisk clip. Aug. 3, 2026 brought updates 1.17.11 and 1.17.12, with 1.18 arriving Aug. 26 and 1.18.1 on Sept. 1.
These point releases are shipping while the studio operates on a tighter budget. In August 2026, co-founder Kieran Warwick confirmed the team cut wages to extend runway past August 2027.
On Sept. 13, ILV climbed 20.26% to $3.73, trading roughly $15.3 million over 24 hours against a market cap of about $30.9 million. A December launch is planned for the Overworld MMO.
As for Arena, it operates on Ethereum, though the bulk of its transactions — NFT minting and trading included — go through Immutable X.
The studio summed up the Hyper revision without hedging: “Hyper finally carries class identity.”
