Seven Years Later, RDR2 Finally Gets a Next-Gen Look — Just Not From Rockstar

On consoles, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still capped at 30 FPS. Seven years after release there’s been no official next-gen patch, no 60fps mode, nothing at all. Rockstar Games has said nothing about addressing it.

So the community built its own solution instead.

People call the game a modern-day masterpiece, one of the greatest ever made, Rockstar’s magnum opus. Every bit of that still stands. (Or at least it will until Grand Theft Auto VI arrives later this year and the whole conversation resets.) Still, the frame rate issue lingers like a splinter, and the fix fans keep waiting on has never arrived.

What DLSS 5.0 actually does to the frame

According to Nvidia, DLSS 5.0 “is a neural rendering model that takes the game’s color and motion vectors as input for each frame, then infuses the scene with photoreal lighting and materials that are anchored to the source 3D content and temporally consistent from frame-to-frame.”

Put simply: it uses AI to reconstruct a scene’s lighting in real time.

Comparison clips covering a long list of beloved games have poured onto the internet since the reveal, and opinion has been divided. Critics keep circling back to the same issue: because the model leans on AI and generative AI, the output carries that “uncanny” quality plenty of us clock instantly in AI-enhanced footage.

Someone finally pointed it at Arthur’s world

A four-minute video from YouTuber Ruaninho BR demonstrates how Red Dead Redemption 2 looks with the tech running, and it’s as close to an answer as anyone has managed so far.

He wanders the in-game camp, snaps photos of camp members and tweaks settings to show the breadth of what the software can manage. The differences are noticeable. Visuals get better across the board, and photo mode especially takes a real leap.

This is no unofficial next-gen update. But for players prepared to run the software themselves, nothing better exists at the moment.

The best compliment in the comments is a backhanded one

Plenty of viewers weren’t sold on the idea that the upgrade was needed in the first place. One comment put it this way: “Rockstar is so awesome that you don’t see that much of a difference with DLSS 5.”

It’s an odd form of flattery, and probably the most accurate assessment anyone has offered. A game from 2018 goes toe to toe with a 2026 neural renderer.

As of this writing, DLSS 5.0 is still a divisive piece of tech. Developers will keep building it into their projects regardless.

Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 carries on exactly as it has since day one: iconic and graphically stunning all by itself, running at 30 frames per second, still waiting.
