Head to a store shelf stocking the PS5 and take a close look at the packaging. There’s a notice on it that wasn’t there before, and it’s Sony spelling out, in blunt terms, that the disc era comes with a deadline.

The text reads, verbatim:

“Important notice: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PS Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”

That closing sentence is the only concession in the whole notice. The library you already own keeps working. What stops is anything new being pressed.

How a games console ended up with a warning label

In early July 2026, Sony used the PlayStation blog to announce that physical production of game discs releasing on its consoles would stop in January 2028.

The reaction from fans was anything but quiet. Some groups pushed for a boycott of PlayStation Online to signal to Sony just how egregious they found the decision.

It changed nothing. Sony doubled down on the company’s Q1 FY2026 earnings call, and buying and owning your games is starting to look like something we’ll one day describe to younger people in the past tense.

The packaging change is what makes it land. A blog post is just a blog post. A warning printed on the box you carry home from the store is a company committing.

What’s actually being taken away

Trade-ins are finished. So is passing a game along to a friend once you’re done with it. More money stays in Sony’s pocket, which is precisely the point.

It also hands them something close to a monopoly on pricing, because the overwhelming majority of purchases will flow through the PlayStation Store rather than third-party vendors. Nobody undercuts the storefront when there’s only one storefront.

A shift to digital only like this is unprecedented. Which is funny, considering who’s doing it.

Sony used to be the one telling this joke

Cast your mind back to the console wars. Xbox tried to force always-online disc verification onto players, and PlayStation jumped on the bandwagon to mock them for it. Sharing your library, Sony demonstrated at the time, should be as simple as handing the disc to your friend.

That was many years ago. They’re fully committed to a digital-only ecosystem now.

Organised PSN blackout periods, petitions, mass pressure across social media: none of it has moved them. Owning physical media is on its way out, and the only lever left is the one that’s always been there. Consumers voting with their wallets. The future of video games is in a very dark, precarious spot right now.

The part nobody wants to dwell on

Marvel’s Wolverine is still on everyone’s list, alongside the perpetually delayed Grand Theft Auto VI. There’s a chance activists could hack the servers and leave those games unplayable somewhere down the line.

Without discs as a fallback, that stops being a hypothetical inconvenience. It becomes a game you paid for, gone.

2028 is still a long way off, and Sony could have a change of heart before January arrives. The future of games like God of War Laufey might depend on it.
