The figure to watch in X’s overhauled creator payout plan isn’t measured in dollars. It’s 500,000.
That’s the number of Home Timeline impressions from verified users you’ll need across the previous 90 days just to be eligible for Original Content Rewards, the program X is rolling out on September 8th in place of its revenue-sharing model. A minimum of 500 verified followers is also required, alongside further conditions.
For anyone earning pocket change from replies and recycled clips, that door is shutting.
What actually counts as an impression now
Payments hinge on “qualified impressions” of “original content.” X’s definition of a qualified impression is a narrow one: a unique impression from a Premium subscriber, served in the Home Timeline feed, with at least 50% of the post visible.
Worth a second look. Not just any impression. Not just any viewer. A Premium subscriber, one particular feed, half the post on screen.
That pool is far smaller than raw view counts, and it’s the piece of the announcement most creators will notice first.
The definition of ‘original’ is the soft spot
Under X’s guidelines, original reporting or analysis qualifies. So does video and photography you shot yourself, along with graphics or illustrations you created — memes included.
From there it turns murky. Commentary and reactions can still count, X says, provided they “add something meaningful.”
Meaningful has gone undefined. The call belongs to X, and it’s precisely the sort of discretion that made the previous program a source of friction.
The stated goal is to stop the gaming
The company framed the change in its announcement post as a step away from clickbait and loophole exploitation. In principle, reposting someone else’s work or farming replies shouldn’t earn anything under the new rules.
Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager, Creators at SpaceXAI, said on X that the program was designed to “reward the creators who bring original ideas, expertise, creativity, and unique perspectives to 𝕏 — not those who have become best at gaming the system.”
A reasonable aim. Then again, the earlier program was sold as a fix too, and it has been reworked again and again under Elon Musk.
Your last payout date
Creators currently enrolled in revenue sharing will keep earning up to September 7th. From the following day, the old system no longer exists.
That leaves a short window to measure two figures in your analytics: verified followers, and 90-day Home Timeline impressions from verified users. Fall short on either threshold and the September 8th switch isn’t an adjustment to your payouts. It’s the end of them.
