When 5,014 BTC shifted out of Metaplanet-linked wallets on Wednesday, blockchain trackers lit up and the move had all the hallmarks of a corporate liquidation. It wasn’t one. The bitcoin simply travelled from one Metaplanet custodial address to another.
That explanation comes from CEO Simon Gerovich, who acted fast to knock down reports of a huge sale once the transfer was flagged.
“We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours. This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC,” Gerovich said.
Measured against spot pricing at the time, that 5,014 BTC carried a value of $320 million. Bitcoin was trading at $63,878.12.
Why a custody shuffle looked like a liquidation
The transfer, spotted Wednesday by data tracking firms, originated from wallets tied to the Tokyo-listed company. Talk that Metaplanet was gearing up to sell started almost instantly.
It’s an understandable reaction. Trackers can show you coins departing a known address, but never the reason behind it.
The detail worth anchoring on is Gerovich’s figure: 43,000 BTC, still unchanged. As long as that holdings number stays flat, there was no sale — no matter how many wallets the coins travelled through.
Treasury companies are under a microscope right now
Digital asset treasury firms, as they’ve come to be known, are facing heavy scrutiny at the moment. Any hint that these large corporate holders are trimming exposure to bank profits or de-risk their balance sheets gets investor attention.
That backdrop is what the 5,014 BTC transfer walked into. Twelve months ago, an identical move likely wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow.
Strategy (MSTR) sits at the head of that pack — and it’s why the suspicion isn’t unfounded.
Strategy actually has been selling
Strategy has been offloading slices of its bitcoin stack to cover dividends on its STRC preferred stock, to buy back STRC and to top up its U.S. dollar reserve.
Those amount to three separate funding requirements, and not one of them signals a bearish view on bitcoin. They do, however, translate into coins leaving the balance sheet.
So when a comparable firm’s wallets start pinging on a tracker, the market instinctively assumes the Strategy playbook is in motion. Metaplanet’s position is that this wasn’t that.
What to watch instead of wallet alerts
One-off transfer alerts are best treated as noise until a company’s reported holdings actually shift. Address rotations, custody operations and internal movements leave exactly the same on-chain footprint as a sale underway.
Here, 43,000 BTC is the number that counts. Should a future Metaplanet disclosure show that figure falling, the sell-off narrative gains substance.
For now, Wednesday’s $320 million transaction amounted to Metaplanet’s bitcoin moving between pockets of the same coat.
Gerovich issued his denial inside 24 hours of the transfer. That turnaround speed says plenty on its own about how intensely these treasury firms are being observed.
