Season 2 of “The Gentlemen” signs off with Eddie Horniman forcing his own brother to kill a man with a chainsaw. That final image is exactly why season 3 already has a job to do before a single scene is written.
Guy Ritchie’s crime drama put its second season on Netflix on Sept. 3. There are eight episodes and they move quickly: car chases, bloody shootouts, sumptuous sets, and schemes tucked inside other schemes. Holding it together is Duke Eddie Horniman (Theo James), pushing to feed his swelling ambitions as both an aristocrat and a drug lord. If you burned through the whole run and are hungry for more, here’s the state of play.
The renewal is official
Netflix and Ritchie confirmed in August that the series was coming back, about a week ahead of the season 2 premiere. So nobody is waiting to find out whether there’s more. The open question is when.
How Eddie got here
In season 1, Eddie returned home after his father’s death, having served as a United Nations peacekeeping officer, only to find a marijuana grow house operating on the family estate. His first instinct was to settle his debt with gang leader Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone). Instead he swung the opposite way, burrowing further into the drug trade and casting it as the route back to the estate’s old glory.
Season 2 pays out the consequences of that choice. Eddie takes a seat as a hereditary peer in the House of Lords with the aim of passing legislation to decriminalize marijuana. Glass wants the bill buried.
Bankrolling the expansion means borrowing from Italian mob boss Marco Moretti (Sergio Castellitto). After the vote collapses, Eddie stakes his estate as collateral on a loan from billionaire Fred Johnston (Giancarlo Esposito) so he can repay Moretti. Bobby then buys that debt from Johnston, giving himself still more leverage over the man he believes is “evolving” into a fit heir to his drug empire.
The wedding, and what came after it
Eddie’s other move is a marriage to Moretti’s goddaughter, the Italian Countess Isabella (Benedetta Porcaroli). One day after the ceremony she is killed by an explosion that was meant to take them both.
The trail leads to his older brother Freddy (Daniel Ings), who has teamed up with Gospel John Dixon (Pearce Quigley), a cocaine dealer settling the score for his own brother’s death back in season 1. Freddy’s scheme extends to abducting his infant nephew, clearing away any rival claimant to the inheritance.
Eddie corners John with assistance from a cocaine supplier tied to Bobby’s daughter Susie (Kaya Scodelario). Then he hands the killing to Freddy. With a chainsaw.
Where season 3 picks up
What drives the next chapter is the wreckage of that betrayal. Season 3 will shove Eddie back toward the decision he keeps declining to make: remain Bobby’s lieutenant, or assemble a criminal empire under his own name.
It was Eddie’s mother who convinced him not to kill Freddy. That is a long way from trusting him again, or welcoming him back to the house. The rest of the family, for their part, is uneasy about being bound to a business this unstable, which is hard to argue with.
Count on the “will they, won’t they” tension between Eddie and Susie continuing to bubble as well, with both of them now unattached.
Don’t hold your breath on a date
“The Gentlemen” first aired in March 2024. The second season landed in September 2026. Season 3 has no official release date, but run the numbers on that interval and 2028 shapes up as the realistic bet.
Ritchie, the director behind “Snatch” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” has assembled a second career out of streaming crime series. Season 2 of his Paramount Plus drama “MobLand” arrives Sept. 18 and has already been renewed for a third. A second season of “Young Sherlock,” his Prime Video show, is in development.
All of which is to say: the man has a full plate. Eddie can wait.
