Something no Pokémon fan has laid eyes on in thirty years surfaced this week in a leaked sketch: a baby Lapras.
It surfaced via Centro LEAKS on Twitter/X, an account with a track record for verifying material from inside the Pokémon developer’s guarded offices. What the scan seems to depict is a pre-evolution for Lapras — a design that once existed, then quietly stopped existing.
Spend a minute thinking about that and it starts to hurt.
The loneliest ‘mon in the original 151
Lapras was never quite like the rest. Every detail the early games offered pointed somewhere unusual: remarkable intelligence, an emotional readiness to help people, a creature that felt tuned to a different frequency than anything else on the roster.
And an evolutionary line of exactly nothing. No stage before it, none after.
Three stages, each stronger than the last, is the norm for most Pokémon. Two is common enough across the original 151 — Vulpix and Ponyta included. Then comes the handful that gets one form and nothing more, and that is where Lapras sits, next to Pinsir and Tauros.
Fans have been asking for years and getting nothing
Demands for a Lapras evolution are hardly a recent development. The novelty here is proof that the developer drew something up and then passed on it. Game Freak has kept quiet about ever converting those plainly internal designs into something real, which explains why the replies under the leak sound less like enthusiasm and more like a complaint.
“Oh wait, we needed that. I always thought Lapras needed a pre-evolution,” one response read.
“Lapras pre-evolution sounds like the cutest thing Pokémon never gave us. Fans would go crazy for this,” another added.
A third sat somewhere between optimism and defeat: “Guess we’ll have to settle for a surprise evolution when we finally see it.”
Generation 10 is the obvious window
Next year brings the first title in Pokémon’s tenth generation, and that is the opening. Going back to older designs, expanding them, rolling out fresh regional forms. It is exactly the sort of moment that could turn a 30-year-old sketch from a curiosity into something you can actually catch.

Whether any of the existing evolutionary lines will be extended remains unknown. Nothing has been said.
Room to maneuver is one thing the franchise has never lacked. Pokémon was created in 1996 by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori and launched by Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures, and it has spread since then into video games, trading cards, animation, films, merchandise and competitive events — one of the highest-grossing entertainment properties ever built. Trainers capture, battle and trade. That is the entire engine.
And in a drawer somewhere at Game Freak, it seems, sits a drawing of a small one.
