Origins Trading Card Game – Alpha Edition launched on Kickstarter on Oct. 27 with a $100,000 funding target. According to the team’s post on X, it hit that “fully funded milestone of $100k in 5 minutes.”

Day one ends at five times the target

Koin Games, which is based in Tampa, Florida, scheduled the campaign for 36 days, with Dec. 2 as the closing date. Backers still have more than a month to pledge now that the stretch goal is behind it.

On the Kickstarter page, the game is described as “a competitive digital TCG with error cards, god packs, & digitally graded cards you really own.” The launch post went further, calling it “the first 100% free digital TCG with cards you can own, trade & sell,” and told players to “Secure your Kickstarter exclusive items now.”

Anyone who wants Alpha Edition cards has to get them here. An AMA recap on the game’s Steam community hub quoted the developers: “The Kickstarter will be priced at a discount to retail and is the last-ever chance to get Alpha Edition (first-print) cards.”

Packs, boxes and a $1 deposit

Backers can choose from three sealed digital products: collector packs, booster boxes and booster cases. A pack has five Alpha Edition cards, one of them a guaranteed rare. Boxes hold 24 packs each, and a case holds six boxes.

Pricing came up in the AMA, where the team said the “Target price point is around $4/collector pack (similar to Pokémon/One Piece economics).”

Ahead of launch, a $1 payment reserved VIP access. It knocked 15% off any pledge and gave early access to the Kickstarter-exclusive Alpha Edition set. The studio’s FAQ described the charge as “a pre-registration tied to our Card Party event, not a payment for the Kickstarter itself.”

Free to compete, no NFTs

The studio’s name for its model is “free-to-compete.” The FAQ states that “every player will receive all the base cards that are in the game for free,” and the paid cosmetic variants don’t affect gameplay.

Card ownership is handled by Steam. “No, there are zero NFTs in Origins TCG,” the FAQ says, and cards pulled from cosmetic packs are “tradable through the Steam Marketplace.”

The AMA recap gave a comparison: “Trading runs through the Steam Marketplace and trading API, like for Counter-Strike skins.”

The card designs come from myths, legends and fairy tales from around the world, and matches are designed to play quickly with tactical decisions. Origins TCG runs on Mac and on PC through Steam. A mobile version is planned, though the team said Steam stability is its first priority.

Timeline

Koin Games had announced that the Kickstarter would line up with Steam Next Fest. “Kickstarter goes live in October, timed with Steam Next Fest,” the AMA recap said.

The studio’s Next Fest plans included a new demo build with a deck builder and pack opening, along with an online qualifier tournament. The recap called it “a major online qualifier tournament with proper broadcast production, featuring Hearthstone/Marvel Snap creators.”

Per the recap, “Early Access follows shortly after in November.” The full release has no set date, according to the FAQ: “The team is targeting Q4 2026. No exact date has been announced yet.”

You can play a demo on Steam now, and the FAQ says demo progress transfers to the full game.
