Most casual fans of Stargate missed it entirely. Without much fanfare, the franchise sidelined SG-1, the team at the heart of 10 seasons and more than 200 episodes, and gave control to a group of unfamiliar faces.
The handover took place in Stargate: Timekeepers, a 2024 real-time tactics game from Slitherine Ltd. It is also the franchise’s most recent official release, and that makes the change look odder the more you consider it.
Meet the new team
Timekeepers is set firmly in the SG-1 era. Its story begins around the close of season seven, opening in the middle of the Battle of Antarctica, so the well-known characters are still very much around.
You just don’t get to play as them. Commander Eva McCain and her unit first appear as support for the famous team in the fight against Anubis. After that, McCain and her specialists take over the story.

McCain is the leader. Her squad is made up of sniper Max Bolton, technical expert Sam Watson, drone specialist Derreck Harper, Jaffa rebel A’ta and Unas warrior Xugga. None of them overlap with the original cast. The game takes this group through an original campaign that involves the Jaffa Resistance, Moloc’s forces and the Unas.
Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal’c are still part of the world. The game simply moves them out of the spotlight on purpose and builds its 14-mission story around characters made for this adventure. The result is that SG-1’s universe carries on, but SG-1 is no longer the team you control.

Why that’s a bold move
SG-1’s biggest draw was always its team. O’Neill, Carter, Jackson and Teal’c mixed humor, loyalty and real camaraderie, and that set the show apart from the more serious sci-fi dramas of its time.
That chemistry explains why the show’s fanbase is still so devoted decades later. Stargate never reached the mainstream scale of Star Trek or Star Wars, but SG-1 still earned an unusually loyal following.

The series did all of this by building on the original Stargate film. It took one idea, travel between planets through ancient portals, and grew it into a huge universe full of alien civilizations, artifacts and long-running character arcs. Swapping out the people at the center of that universe is a big decision, even for a spinoff game.
The revival that didn’t come
Fans hoped Timekeepers would be the start of something larger. That didn’t happen.
The game came out on PC in January 2024, and Part 2 finished its 14-mission campaign in October 2024. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions were announced in December 2025. There hasn’t been another major original Stargate game since.
On television, things have gone even worse. In November 2025, Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlit a new Prime Video series. Longtime Stargate writer Martin Gero was attached as showrunner, and Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi were also involved. On paper, it was the franchise’s best chance at a real comeback in years.
In June 2026, however, Amazon MGM chose not to go ahead with the project, and Stargate was once again left with no new series.
Where that leaves the franchise
For a property with decades of lore and a loyal audience, the situation is a bit absurd. The newest official Stargate story is a tactics game, and the heroes at its center aren’t the characters fans fell in love with.
Somewhere in that game, Eva McCain is still taking Xugga, A’ta and the rest of her team through the gate while O’Neill and the others watch from the sidelines. For the time being, she is the closest thing Stargate has to a new lead.
