The Witcher’s last chapter won’t be arriving this year after all.
A 2026 debut for season 5 had been the general assumption, an expectation drawn from Netflix’s own promotional material and the production’s filming timeline. A new report now places it in 2027 instead.
There was no announcement. The date simply shifted, quietly.
The season has been finished for a while
Cameras stopped rolling on the fifth and final season all the way back in September 2025 — just weeks ahead of season 4's Netflix premiere in October 2025. That timing is precisely what makes the postponement so conspicuous.
New seasons of The Witcher have generally dropped every other year. Judged against that cadence, season 5’s timing is the outlier rather than the norm.
Seasons 4 and 5 were shot and produced back-to-back. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich noted last year that her writers approached “season 4 and 5 as one large story.”
“We knew we had to break it up in terms of how it would be launched on Netflix, but truly it’s the story of this family journey back together, and I think when we’re choosing specifically what details to include from the books, we look for a really sort of diverse sort of swath of things,” Hissrich said, adding, “And at the end of the day, it has to be 16 narrative episodes that feel cohesive.”
That’s sixteen episodes designed as a single narrative, divided into two seasons — and now with a full extra year jammed into the seam between them.
Season 4 was the show’s worst reviewed
Season 4 marked a nadir for the live-action fantasy drama, drawing some of the harshest critical notices in its run. A portion of the audience also soured on the series once Geralt was recast.
That casting change remains the fault line the series has been balanced on ever since. The Witcher debuted on Netflix in 2019 with Henry Cavill playing Geralt of Rivia. Cavill exited in 2022, handing the part to Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, Independence Day: Resurgence).
Everyone else stayed put: Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, Eamon Farren as Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach (aka Black Knight) and Joey Batey as Jaskier.
As for Cavill, he’s currently occupied with bringing the Warhammer 40,000 franchise to Prime Video.
There’s still Witcher coming, just not on Netflix
There is, at least, something else for fans to look forward to. CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4 puts Ciri front and centre as its lead and is intended to launch a fresh trilogy of games.
Which leaves the slate looking something like this: a completed season gathering dust, a Ciri-led game still in development, and Andrzej Sapkowski waiting for everyone to grow up and discover books.
