Starshower isn’t in the business of burning cities. Her specialty is catching meteors.

That detail alone makes her the oddest name added to the Game of Thrones dragon roster in years, and she didn’t debut on HBO. Her debut came in a mobile game.

The newest dragon in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is Starshower – The Wishkeeper, from the 4X mobile strategy game built by Warner Bros. Boston. Her entire purpose is guarding against the sky itself, with the lore describing her as “standing guard between the realm and the wrath of the skies.”

Not exactly the same line of work Vhagar was in.

A dragon born from a meteor shower

According to the game's lore, Starshower was “first seen during a summer when the heavens turned restless,” appearing amid a meteor shower where “she circled watchfully above the countryside, each sweep of her wings scattering the meteors harmlessly into the distant sea.”

Conquest isn’t her role. She’s an early warning system with wings.

“Starshower is said to appear only when catastrophe looms from above—comets, omens, or worse—standing guard between the realm and the wrath of the skies.”

It’s a framing that leaves her in strange company. Dragons in this world typically arrive to finish something off. She arrives to stop something from happening.

How you actually get her

The Epic Sentinel is unlocked via the Shadow of the Greens campaign, one of the game’s three main campaigns.

There’s a catch, though. Sentinel dragons are normally the backbone of a roster’s defense. Starshower’s specialty is Tactical damage instead.

In other words, a Sentinel who punches back.

The Solar Flare loop

Marks are what her kit is built around. Starshower stamps Solar Flare marks onto enemy dragons, then consumes those marks over and over to deal Tactical damage while handing defensive bonuses to allies.

Starfall Command handles the setup automatically, applying marks to enemies as soon as the battle begins.

Keeping the whole machine turning is Ill Portents. It gradually pushes her damage higher, and once every mark has been used up, it can put Solar Flare back on the board later in the fight.

Rounding things out is Night Guardian, which strips negative effects and gives allies Evade. That ability is what earns her a roster spot even on a team that isn’t short on damage.

An attacker that also cleans up your messes. You don’t see that often.

The lineage she’s joining is enormous

Fire & Blood, from George R.R. Martin, mapped out a dragon bloodline running across thousands of years of Targaryan history, and over the past several years HBO has been bringing those creatures to screen via House of the Dragon.

Vhagar. Caraxes. Syrax. Meleys. Sunfyre. Vermithor. Silverwing. Dreamfyre. Viewers finally got a look at the faces behind those names.

The show also refused to treat them as interchangeable scenery. Across the books and the series alike, each dragon carries its own look, temperament and combat style, shaped around a particular bond between rider and beast.

With Vhagar, the size is the threat. With Caraxes, it’s the serpentine frame. Meleys trades on speed and elegance.

All of it adds up to a real expansion of the franchise’s dragon lore, reaching well beyond anything the original Game of Thrones gave audiences.

None of it happens without the original three

The heavy lifting was done first by Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion. Daenerys Targaryen’s trio is why these creatures grip audiences on screen in the first place.

Every dragon since has been built on the foundation they laid.

And the roster hasn’t stopped expanding. Fresh dragons are still joining this universe, which is a genuinely strange thing to write about a show that wrapped years ago.

Worth a download

Starshower is one of several unique dragons in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, and the game can be downloaded for free on the App Store and Google Play.
