Sky Mavis restores Ronin Wallet’s fiat purchase site after lengthy downtime

sky mavis restores ronin wallets fiat purchase site after lengthy downtime In Brief:

In Brief:

  • According to Sky Mavis, the purchase site sitting behind the +Fund > Buy Crypto option in Ronin Wallet is live again, ending a stretch in which fiat purchases were unavailable in both the extension and the mobile app.
  • “Necessary updates” were the reason given for the outage, with the account offering no dates, no duration and no rundown of which providers or regions were hit.
  • The wallet’s fiat on-ramp, +Fund, runs through the aggregator Onramper and remains the only route to buy crypto with a card without stepping outside the wallet.

A path that had been dead inside the browser extension and the mobile app alike is working again: Sky Mavis has restored the purchase site powering Ronin Wallet’s fiat on-ramp.

“Buying crypto with fiat has been unavailable inside the Ronin Wallet extension and mobile app for an extended period due to necessary updates,” said the Ronin Shield account on X, which handles wallet and account service notices for Sky Mavis. “The purchase site is back online, and will be available in the Ronin wallet’s +Fund feature”.

Missing from the post: when the feature broke, how long it stayed down, which on-ramp providers were caught up in it, and whether every region is covered by the fix. The wording also avoided declaring the wallet integration live, noting only that the flow “will be available” in +Fund.

What +Fund does

In the redesigned wallet interface, Fund sits alongside Swap, Send and Receive as one of four buttons, on the extension and on mobile. Onramper powers it.

When Ronin announced the upgrade, it said the integration opened routes through MoonPay, GrabPay and 175+ other payment options. Developer documentation from Sky Mavis, meanwhile, cites 130+ payment methods, 120+ currencies and 190+ countries. Those two sets of figures don’t match.

Ronin’s support docs lay out the flow: hit Fund, enter a currency, then choose a token, an amount and a payment method, check the rate coming from whichever provider Onramper picked, and click Buy. Clicking the provider name shown beneath the rate lets users swap in a different one. Onramper points to the cheapest and fastest route it can find, though fees and KYC requirements differ from provider to provider.

The purchase site

Top-ups and withdrawals are handled by the standalone site at purchase.roninchain.com, which converts between local fiat and USDC and completes the transaction through a selected on-ramp or off-ramp provider.

The integrated gateways are Transak and Ramp Network. On Ronin, Transak covers USDC, RON, SLP and WETH, and depending on the country supports credit and debit cards, SEPA and ACH bank transfers, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Ramp’s list is RON, AXS, SLP, USDC and WETH.

MoonPay is still described directly in Ronin’s older fiat deposit FAQ, which lists RON, SLP, USDC and PIXELS. Because on-ramp availability differs from country to country, Ronin points users to the Deposit page to see what is live where they are.

Other ways in

Every documented workaround during the outage was an indirect one. Tokens could be bridged in from another network and moved via Cross-chain Swap, deposited straight from a Binance or Coinbase account through the Ronin mobile app, or withdrawn from an exchange with the Ronin network selected manually. Ronin deposits and withdrawals are supported across Binance, Gate.io, MEXC, Crypto.com, BitGet, OKX, Coins.ph, Tokocrypto and Coinex.

Background

SOL deposits arrived in the same wallet upgrade that brought the Fund button, pushing cross-chain swaps out to Solana assets.

Ronin operates as a delegated proof-of-stake chain, is home to more than a dozen games and supports native USDC via Circle’s CCTP. Sky Mavis is now positioning it as an Ethereum Layer 2. Block 46,557,383 on July 3 marked the activation of the Feather Fan upgrade, and a Katana upgrade is penciled in for the third quarter.

July 12 brought Sky Mavis’s announcement of a Governance Dashboard, with a voting interface due in Q3 that would give RON holders a say on treasury allocations and protocol upgrades. On Aug. 2, during Vietnam Blockchain Week, the team ran a Ronin Forge meetup in Hanoi.

The March 2022 bridge exploit cost Ronin roughly $625 million. It started with a fake LinkedIn job offer that planted malware on a Sky Mavis employee’s device, giving attackers four of nine validator keys; the fifth signature came from a stale allowlist dating to November 2021 that was discontinued the next month but never revoked. Sky Mavis raised $150 million, in a round led by Binance, to reimburse users.

Buying is only half the pipe. Transak’s own RON page continues to warn that the token may be temporarily unsupported for selling, directing users to contact support or consult its supported-cryptocurrencies list before attempting to cash out.
