Somewhere north of 60 games have been banned in one country or another. For a medium this young, that is a striking tally, and one of its most infamous entries is now digging itself out of the grave censors dug for it.
Postal 2 is returning. Not as a nostalgia footnote, but as a full release on modern platforms, bankrolled by a Kickstarter campaign that sailed past every stretch goal the developers put in front of it.
A ban worn like a badge
That 2003 shooter did not stumble into its exile by accident. Violence with no brakes, humour with no filter and a weapons list long enough to give John Wick pause, all wrapped in the kind of gleefully graphic carnage you’d expect from an episode of The Boys.
Guinness World Records has it on the books as the “most critically divisive video game.” That is not a marketing line. That is a records authority effectively conceding defeat.
Up to now, actually playing it required a PC and the right passport. Certain countries only.
The Kickstarter that doubled its target
Every stretch goal fell, and Postal 2 Redux ended up pulling in more than twice the sum its developers actually required to get the game published.
A firm release date has yet to be announced. The window being pointed to is Q1 2027.
Logically, it adds up. Flat2VR Studios already shipped a well-received VR conversion of the game, which made a flat-screen edition for PC and console owners the natural follow-up.
What’s changed under the hood
Unity is the engine powering Redux, and the art has been rebuilt from the ground up. The game has never looked better.
Guns carry noticeably more punch and bite this time around. Indoor spaces break apart far more readily, which flatters the game’s anarchic shootouts enormously.
Load screens have effectively been eliminated. NPC intelligence has been upgraded too, so the moment things go sideways they summon reinforcements faster, navigate more cleverly, and the police overreact in the most entertaining way imaginable.
Layer a stack of quality of life improvements over all of that, and Paradise finally behaves the way a modern game is supposed to.
Will it get banned again?
Nobody is willing to say yet, and the question hangs there unanswered.
Consoles are policed far more tightly than PC, so the console edition could show up trimmed and censored in places. Australia, New Zealand and Germany apply strict content rules of their own.
Should the game ship completely uncut, bans in several countries are all but guaranteed.
So whether you get to spend a week in Paradise with loyal companion Champ at your heel may come down to nothing more than your address once 2027 rolls around.
Earned, for once
Plenty of content gets banned over reasons that make little sense. With Postal 2 Redux, a ban would feel thoroughly deserved.
What remains of 2026 is Grand Theft Auto VI territory. The leaks, the announcements, the launch itself, the lot. Which makes it worth remembering that a sandbox engineered purely for mayhem is waiting just beyond it.
Postal 2 Redux is not going to suit everybody. What it does offer is The Boys’ comic book brutality fused with John Wick’s gunfighting, and Flat2VR Studios hardly needs a Rockstar-sized shelf of 10/10 classics for that to justify your time.
Weird, whacky and, once Q1 2027 arrives, quite possibly illegal wherever you happen to live.
