In Brief:

  • Alien Worlds (official site) has unveiled Planetary Defense Beta V3 — the third iteration of the Magor-based strategy title — which is now playable at beta.planetarydefense.io.
  • Alongside the release, MjaM sat down for an interview describing the journey from an initial Land Defense concept to a fuller strategy game centered on teamwork, NFT utility, missions, bosses, PvP and community input.
  • Features in this build were bankrolled by an Alien Worlds community grant backed by Galactic Hubs, adding to the 90,000 TLM previously greenlit across three Magor Custodian proposals.

Beta V3 is live for Planetary Defense, relocating the Magor strategy game to a rebuilt site hosted at beta.planetarydefense.io.

The announcement from Alien Worlds arrived together with an interview featuring MjaM, who walked through how a Land Defense concept turned into a broader strategy experience structured around teamwork, NFT utility, missions, bosses, PvP and community-driven design.

What the beta includes

To get going in V3, players link a WAX wallet, choose a leader, and assemble a military division from NFT creatures, weapons and supplies.

Rewards come from missions, which also unlock fresh territories. Bigger payouts are attached to community raids, while players can either strike at rival lands to seize resources and move up the leaderboard, or hold the line against raids on their own holdings.

Resources flow from staked NFT lands. Equipment is forged by players and sold through the game’s marketplace.

None of the broader premise has shifted. Defenses are built by landowners, mercenaries either sign on for raids or sell their services as protection, and players tackle PvE threats and PvP battles while grinding missions for Planetary Defense Token, or PDT. Vote power and chest upgrades affect what those payouts look like.

How PvP works

Chests filled with PDT are the basis of combat. On a three-day cycle, whoever holds the largest PDT stash is designated the primary target.

A 48-hour defense phase then begins, giving the marked player time to pick up additional NFTs and recruit allies to push up a defense score. Once that window closes, a 24-hour attack phase begins.

Hold out successfully and you receive 30 days of protection. Fail, and the attackers split the chest equally between them.

What you need to play

To enter, you need a minimum of one Alien Worlds face NFT or a single land on an eligible planet, at common rarity or higher.

Troops are led by faces serving as commanders. The number of crew slots a commander has depends on rarity, and those slots are filled automatically by whichever crew deliver the greatest advantage.

Custody stays with the player. NFTs remain in their hands, and a program checks the wallet for changes over the course of the day, refreshing stats in real time.

Funding and background

Three proposals in support of Planetary Defense cleared Magor’s Custodians, with 90,000 TLM allocated in total. At the time, Alien Worlds described it as a game backed by Magor’s Custodians and set in a universe of its own.

A subsequent grant from the Alien Worlds community, supported by Galactic Hubs, approved the PvP mode and paid for new utilities for Alien Worlds Avatars, whose abilities and bonuses scale with rarity and shine level. Improved mission rewards, a redesigned website and broader lore were also covered by that grant.

The project debuted on WAX as a two-stage game. The first stage plays out in Discord, where missions yield in-game coins, quantum keys and chests that can be minted to a WAX wallet free of charge. The second stage is the browser-based strategy game.

What started as one isolated planet, with players fighting over currency and leaderboard position, later expanded into a six-planet game spanning attack, defense and cooperative challenges. Payouts arrive in PDT and TLM along with shard points that can be minted into usable NFTs. Bonuses come from Warlords and Mercenaries NFTs.

The PvP phase arrived by the first quarter of 2025, bringing real-time battles built on NFT loadouts and strategic card builds, plus seasonal events and weekly challenges.

Projects of this kind draw funding from the planet DAOs, which are able to route as much as 25 percent of their mining reward pool into community initiatives such as tools, games, events and creative work.
