A series that premiered back in 1997 has seized the global streaming conversation once more, and the trick it used was rebranding itself.
The season 29 premiere, “South American Biker Gangs,” turned up under a fresh banner: South America. Inside 24 hours of going to air, it ranked as the most-watched sitcom on streaming services anywhere in the world. Thousands of people headed to Paramount Plus the moment it dropped.
On the service itself, it settled into the No. 2 slot for most popular TV show, with only Lioness ahead of it. Writing that about a 29-year-old animated comedy feels faintly ridiculous, but there it is.
The rename is the punchline
Trey Parker and Matt Stone swapped the title as a jab at President Donald Trump’s move to rebrand geography — the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, each with “America” tacked on. Apple and Google played along. And so South Park turned into South America.
Tampering with your own title is hardly a minor gesture. The name carries most of a show’s identity, and 28 seasons’ worth of brand equity isn’t something anyone hands over on a whim. Parker and Stone did it regardless, which says plenty about how badly they wanted the joke to stick.

The gamble paid off. Audiences wanted to see how the rebrand would actually look on screen, and that curiosity translated into viewership figures most comedies never touch in a debut season, never mind a 29th.
Trump keeps ending up in the crosshairs
He has been the show’s central subject across several seasons now. Every year the series pulls in whatever people are already fighting about and mocks it — that has been the engine driving the whole thing for decades. The satire is the purpose, and neither creator seems remotely interested in dialing it back.

Where you can watch it
“South American Biker Gangs” runs on Comedy Central at 10 p.m. EDT/PDT. A day later it reaches Paramount Plus for audiences in the United States, Canada and Australia. Everybody else is still stuck waiting.
So the biggest sitcom on streaming at this moment hasn’t even rolled out everywhere.
