Depending on the model, a Samsung phone may receive Android updates for as long as seven years, or for as few as four if it’s a cheaper device. Where your phone sits on that scale tells you whether it can last another year or whether you should start looking for a replacement.

The question is more pressing than usual. Android 17 launched this year with a number of productivity-focused improvements, and Samsung has already rolled out One UI 9, its software built on Android 17, to devices including the Galaxy Fold 8 series and the Flip 8. People with older Galaxy devices will want to know whether their phone is due for the upgrade or has been left behind.

What you paid determines how long support lasts

Samsung links software support to the price of the device. Its flagships get up to seven years of Android updates. Midrange phones get roughly five to six years, and budget models get up to four.

Samsung’s affordable A series feels this difference the most. Security patches usually keep reaching phones long after they’ve peaked. Updates that actually change how your phone works are less common, and the cheaper the phone, the earlier they end.

Phone makers have also only recently started offering long support windows. Older devices were never sold with those promises attached, so many of them may already have lost support.

A-series models still getting updates

Galaxy A34 owners will keep receiving Android updates until March 2027. The Galaxy A54 5G has the same cutoff of March 2027.

The Galaxy A73 has already run out of luck. Its Android updates ended as of April 2026.

Rugged tablets last the longest

Samsung’s tablets show just how far apart support dates can be. The Galaxy Tab Active 5 gets Android updates until January 2028, while the Tab Active 5 Pro is supported much longer, until 2033.

That’s roughly five years of difference between two tablets with almost identical names. If you plan to keep one for a long time, the Pro version is worth a lot.

Samsung is also still updating some of its wearables this year.

Samsung doesn’t announce when support ends

This is the most frustrating part. Phone makers give no advance warning before they stop sending software and security updates, and no notification appears to say your phone has lost support.

It’s up to you to check your model. Samsung maintains a security update list you can look through. For a faster check, open your Settings app: if your phone hasn’t received an update in several months or years, it’s likely no longer supported.

The cost of running an unsupported phone

Once security patches end, your phone is open to new threats from hackers. That’s the biggest risk, and it grows with every month you go unpatched.

Apps begin to fall away as well. Developers target the newest OS versions, so the more updates you miss, the more apps stop working on your device.

Look out for warning signs. Odd popups, or apps that appear on their own and use up your mobile data, could mean your device has been hacked. If that happens, you need a new phone.

The same applies if you’re buying refurbished. A cheap Galaxy listing loses most of its value if the phone’s updates end within the year. Check the model’s support date before you buy, not after.
