Searching Gmail has never been precise. You can find what you need if you remember who sent it, what the subject line said or happen to guess the right keyword. If you can’t, you’re stuck scrolling through thread after thread looking for one number hidden in a confirmation email.

Google’s answer is to let you simply ask for it. Gmail Live, the conversational voice search the company unveiled at I/O, has now left beta. There’s a condition, though: it’s only available to people who pay for a Google AI plan.

Speaking to your inbox rather than typing into it

Gmail Live behaves a lot like the live voice conversations in the Gemini chatbot, except it’s built for a single app. Each of Gmail, Docs and Keep gets its own take on the feature.

The point is to find a specific detail in your inbox so you don’t have to wade through endless threads yourself. “Use conversational search to find information just by asking things like, ‘What’s my flight’s gate number?’ or ‘What’s going on at my kid’s school this week?’ and Gmail Live will scan your inbox and give you answers quickly,” Google said.

The two examples reveal a lot. A gate number is one fact in one email. A week of school activities is scattered across newsletters, reminders and last-minute updates. Google says Gmail Live can manage both, and the school question is the tougher of the two.

Docs Live aims to handle your first draft

Documents are getting the same treatment. In Docs Live, you describe the kind of document you need, and Gemini gathers relevant details from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the broader web. It then lays out a first draft and helps you fine-tune the tone.

A drafting tool is getting access to a lot of your data here. Whether it’s actually useful comes down to whether it picks the right emails and files, and a polished demo is exactly where you won’t see that tested.

Keep Live turns stray thoughts into lists

Keep is where many people jot down an idea before they lose it. According to Google, Keep Live “turns brain dumps into organized notes” and is designed to “capture, structure and refine your ideas into organized, actionable notes.”

The company said the voice feature works through your commands in the background, “turning your thoughts into structured lists and notes without you having to type a single word.”

In Google’s demo, a user says, “I promised my son I would paint his room this weekend… I’m going to need a list of instructions as well as supplies.” Keep Live responds with “Preparing your painting note now” and puts together a shopping list and a how-to guide.

Availability and timing

Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers are getting Gmail Live and Keep Live this week. Docs Live is only available on Pro and Ultra.

Google Workspace business customers will have to wait. For them, all three features are listed only as “coming soon.” That’s an odd gap, since the inbox packed with flight confirmations and meeting threads is often a work inbox. If your email lives there, you’ll be using the search bar for a while longer.
