In Brief:
- Builder Sam Withers says Pocket Dragons is organizing its ecosystem around five core pillars, the first two being GameFi and NFTs and collectibles.
- The collection will hold 6,000 Dragons across 352 combinations, with burning, upgrades and exclusive 1/1s.
- The Solana project has rolled out slowly and told its story in stages through its Hatchery. It hasn’t announced a mint price or date.
Pocket Dragons will top out at 6,000 Dragons. Sam Withers, who builds the project, gave the figure in a post on X that laid out the first two of the five pillars the project is built around.
Under the NFT and collectibles pillar, that supply is spread across 352 combinations. Withers said the layer covers burning, upgrades and exclusive 1/1s.
Welcome to the world of @Pocket_Dragons_
We're building an entire ecosystem around 5 core pillars.
GameFi – Play, collect, bond with your Dragons and unlock achievements.
NFTs & Collectibles – 6,000 Dragons, 352 combinations, burning, upgrades and exclusive 1/1s.Sam WithersView on X ↗
The GameFi pillar is about playing with Dragons, collecting them and bonding with them, with achievements to earn as players go. “We’re building an entire ecosystem around 5 core pillars,” Withers said.
Only those two pillars appeared in the post. The other three weren’t described.
Mint details still pending
The team hasn’t released a mint price or a mint date. Before the post, the supply figure hadn’t been confirmed in public.
The mint is gated by a whitelist. In a post he pinned on Sept. 8, Withers told followers that if they wanted to get in early with Pocket Dragons and secure WL, that was probably their best chance.
That post reshared a project update written as a dispatch from inside the game’s world. “Incubator #001 is active. For the first time in thousands of years, signs of life have been recorded,” it read.
Inside the Hatchery
Visitors to pocketdragons.io land on “The Ancient Hatchery,” which links to the team, a Creator Kit and a leaderboard named the Keeper Ledger.
In an earlier post, Withers said the Hatchery would open that week after a year of building. Pocket Dragons calls itself a new category of collectibles, which it names CollectFi.
The lore has come out in installments. “I know this ain’t your normal go to market strategy for a NFT collection but we like to do things differently,” Withers said.
On Oct. 11, a community member posting as 0xRecep listed 2D PFPs, animated dragons, mini-games, eggs and a badge system among the project’s features. The post said users have plenty to do before the mint.
The team and its community
Withers lives in Melbourne, and his X bio says he has been in crypto since 2016. When he first announced the project in May, he said the team had been building quietly for nine months. He called it original IP with multiple products already built.
According to Withers, the project was “Built by a team of 4 with a vision, a lot of late nights, and an incredible community behind us.”
Attendance at the weekly AMAs he hosts keeps climbing. He said recently that 1,000 people had joined one session.
“1,000 PEOPLE IN THE @Pocket_Dragons_ AMA! 🔥 YOU GUYS ARE CRAZY!! Since we launched 6 weeks ago the energy, questions, and support from this community have been unreal. Thank you to everyone who shows up! ❤️” Withers said.
Pocket Dragons is also the name of Real Musgrave’s figurines, which first went on sale in June 1989. No public record ties the two together.
