A Reddit post claims a PlayStation account was frozen the moment its owner sent a friend a GTA 6 gameplay clip through PS App messages.

The claim comes from Redditor Silver-Succotash-612, who shared it in the GTA6unmoderated subreddit. This is a single unverified account, posted by one user about what happened to a friend, so some caution is warranted. The details are specific, though, and anyone who trades clips over PSN may want to think twice.

What the Reddit post claims

Silver-Succotash-612 says the friend tried to pass the clip to a contact. The footage may have originated with Cyberleek. The PSN profile was frozen on the spot. When the friend contacted support, they were told an appeal would take three months, which makes a quick return to the account look unlikely.

None of this has been confirmed by Sony. On the record, Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar have filed DMCA takedown requests against GTA 6 leaks on social media. If this story holds up, Sony may also be monitoring the PS App for unauthorized footage.

Message bans have happened before, but not this quickly

Sony has a history of banning PlayStation players who share content that violates its terms of service. One user received a 30-day account ban after posting a Conan Exiles screenshot with nude characters in a private group chat.

What stands out in this case is the speed and severity of the response. Sony staff usually only investigate possible violations after another player files a report. In this case, the GTA 6 leak was only being discussed privately between two friends.

Two possible explanations for the flag

One possibility is automated monitoring. Sony launched Nudge in March 2025, a feature that spots inappropriate messages and warns the people in the conversation. Support still isn’t supposed to read messages or restrict a PlayStation account unless someone reports it, though.

The second possibility is that PlayStation has tightened up ahead of the GTA 6 release date. Sony and Rockstar share a lucrative marketing deal, and the PS5 version could draw plenty of new customers into Sony's ecosystem. Leaks that get ahead of official announcements could damage both companies, so Sony has a motive to act harshly.

The PS App was the wrong place to share it

Most people responding to the story said the friend should have picked a different app. Cyberleek’s videos have circulated on platforms where DMCA strikes carry less risk, and Sony’s own messaging service obviously doesn’t qualify.

Some readers pushed back on Sony, however. They raised privacy concerns about a private conversation getting flagged in the first place and asked whether one shared video justified an indefinite ban.
