Portal launches Nexus, the model-routing API powering its AI game-dev stack

Six blocky fantasy heroes face a swirling purple portal in a cosmic sky, surrounded by ice, lava, and treasure

In Brief:

  • Portal (official site) has released Portal Nexus, the unified API teased since June under its working name GameRouter, and is sending creators to nexus.portalgaming.com.
  • Positioned beneath Portal Studio, Nexus directs prompts to specialized models for code, sprites and audio, doing away with the per-vendor key sprawl that agent workflows typically demand.
  • The release is the second of four products on the Portal 2.0 roadmap the Animoca-backed team outlined in April, leaving GameGen and GameHub (official site) yet to arrive.

Portal Nexus is live.

In a post on X this week, the company confirmed the rollout and pointed developers toward nexus.portalgaming.com. “It’s been a loud week,” Portal wrote. “Portal Nexus has officially LAUNCHED, and your energy is amazing!”

The product had gone by the internal label GameRouter since April, when Portal put out its post-pivot product map. The bracket shipped without any renaming.

What Nexus does

According to Portal, Nexus is a single API interface for handling agents, assets and pipelines across a game-dev stack. Its routing layer decides which model takes a given request, passing code, sprite and audio prompts to whichever specialized model suits them.

Portal’s June 22 teaser was direct about the pain point it targets. “Your agents shouldn’t have to battle your infrastructure just to get things done,” the company said. “Nexus is a unified API that powers your agents, assets, and pipelines across your entire game-dev stack.”

Roughly a month separated that teaser from the launch post.

The Studio connection

Nexus is less a standalone tool than the plumbing beneath one. Portal Studio, the shared workspace the team released earlier this year, already pulls specialized models from Nexus whenever creators generate characters, tiles and sprites, with output previewed before it lands in a project.

Studio is stack-agnostic. Creators wire Claude, OpenAI or custom MCP workers into a single map, and in a mid-June update Portal removed the API key requirement altogether for agents running on Portal inference. Click an offline agent, choose a model, hit connect.

The team frames that workflow as the creator acting as director rather than senior dev.

Studio additionally includes guided milestones for shipping an actual game with agents in the loop, whether by pushing builds to an external engine or building on Gen8, Portal’s own integrated engine. Persistent Worlds give creators and players a shared space to meet, while agents receive Worlds of their own where they interact and trade on a user’s behalf.

From liquidity layer to AI stack

For its first two years, Portal operated as an interoperability and liquidity layer for web3 gaming. The company unveiled Portal 2.0 on April 18 and branded the moment “Day 1.”

That pivot pointed toward AI-native tooling and creator-first workflows, aimed at non-developers as well as veteran studios. Four products were named: Studio, GameRouter, GameGen for prompt-generated games and GameHub for monetization. Two have now shipped.

Benjamin Charbit serves as CEO. Formerly a director at Ubisoft, where he worked on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, he took the role in December 2025 when Portal merged with BLIFE Protocol.

The merger was announced Dec. 22, 2025, with Animoca Brands and G-20 backing the relaunch. BLIFE contributed Beyond, a tridirectional Bitcoin L1 bridge it acquired in mid-2025 and is readying for mainnet, along with BLIFE.ID and the memecoin platform Odin.fun. The combined discovery layer is anchored by Portal Hub. Leadership is now drawn primarily from Animoca.

An earlier Portal roadmap attached the Nexus name to something completely different: a cross-chain gaming experience built for asset-to-asset transactions. The name made it through the pivot. The product did not.

Where the token fits

Revenue from its AI tools is earmarked for regular PORTAL buybacks. Holders receive early access, advanced tool usage rights and voting rights.

PORTAL distributed 50 million tokens via Binance Launchpool between Feb. 22 and Feb. 28, 2024. Total supply stands at 1 billion, of which roughly 592.5 million circulates. Its all-time high was $3.36, reached Feb. 29, 2024.

Prior to that, Portal pulled in more than $28.7 million across pre-sale and private rounds in December 2023. Among the backers were Rockstar Games co-founder Jamie King, EA Games Global Director of Platform Matt Dixon, Newman Group CEO Adrian Lai and Team Secret CEO John Yao.

Legacy staking remains unresolved. In mid-June the team said it was finalizing a solution and planned to publish an unstaking guide.

Portal ended its launch post with a message for those now building on the product: “Rest up this weekend, creators! The infrastructure never sleeps.”
