In Brief:
- The Sandbox (official site) has shipped Studio Beta with Engine 14, a release carrying substantial architectural changes.
- A new SceneNode structure makes asset placement easier and gives creators better prefab handling.
- Multiplayer replication has also been improved, and AI tools are now publicly available.
The Sandbox unveils Engine 14
Engine 14 has arrived as part of The Sandbox’s Studio Beta update, and it marks a major turn for the platform’s development framework. Gone is the legacy Actor/SceneComponent structure, replaced by a single unified SceneNode format that streamlines the creator workflow.
Assets no longer need an Actor container and can be dropped straight into scenes, cutting steps out of a developer’s day. The willingness to break backward compatibility signals a firm commitment to moving the platform forward.
Enhanced prefab management
Prefab items are now first-class assets, which gives creators far more room to work with them. Building and editing prefabs happens directly in the main scene view, with no mode switching involved. Individual instances can be overridden while still staying linked to the original prefab — a fix for the GUID regeneration headaches that used to surface during saves.
It is an upgrade that puts The Sandbox on firmer footing next to Unity and Unreal, especially for repeatable elements such as enemy spawns and modular components.
Multiplayer improvements
Multiplayer replication has been reworked around a new system of ReplicationGroup channels. Networked objects can now be spawned by servers and made visible to specific players only, which simplifies instanced loot and per-user tailored experiences.
AI tools and new templates
The AI Assistant is now publicly accessible, with its functionality extended across every Studio project, setup simplified and additional AI providers folded in. Rather than handling basic interactions alone, the Genesys MCP Server can now let AI agents carry out several scene changes at the same time.
Two additional templates — Side-scrolling and 3rd-person Action — round out the release, alongside refinements to multi-object selection and navigation mesh calculation. Together with three key breaking changes that underline the architectural shift, they make clear that Engine 14 is a foundational overhaul and not a simple patch.
“Sandbox’s direction is clear, and we’re setting the stage for more complex interactions now,” said a spokesperson from The Sandbox.
