The country’s biggest bank isn’t constructing a crypto desk of its own. It’s leasing one.
Bank Leumi has announced plans to open cryptocurrency trading to its customers starting in early 2027, a first among Israeli banks. The execution layer — and the custody sitting beneath it — will be supplied by Galaxy Digital (GLXY).
That division of labor is the more revealing detail here, more so than the launch date.
What you’ll be able to buy, and where
According to a Friday announcement, clients of Leumi and of Pepper, its mobile banking arm, will be able to buy, hold and sell bitcoin, ether and solana (SOL) via a dedicated section within the Leumi Trade app.
Three assets — that’s it. No sprawling token menu, no listings pipeline. BTC, ETH, SOL.
And it sits inside the capital-markets app customers already use, rather than requiring a separate download with its own credentials and onboarding flow.
Galaxy is the engine, not the badge
Trading and related services will be delivered by Galaxy Digital through GalaxyOne Institutional, the firm’s platform built for banks and asset managers.
Separately, Leumi has inked an agreement to tap Galaxy’s custody infrastructure — previously called GK8 — to underpin the offering.
The bank, in other words, owns the interface and the customer relationship, while Galaxy owns execution and the keys. Nearly every bank crypto rollout has followed this template, and it explains how an institution can put a 2027 date on the calendar without staffing up a trading floor.
The bet underneath the announcement
For Galaxy, the deal secures a banking partner in Israel; for Leumi, it means joining an expanding cohort of financial institutions folding crypto access into their own customer platforms.
Placing trading inside its capital-markets app is a wager that customers will prefer a regulated banking front end to a standalone crypto exchange.
That’s a genuine wager, not a box-ticking exercise. Exchange apps iterate faster and typically cost less. A bank counters with the account you already hold, the compliance checks you already cleared and a support line where somebody picks up.
What the executives said
Maya Ravia, who heads strategy at Leumi, characterized digital assets as an increasingly integral part of the global financial system.
Lior Lamesh, CEO of Galaxy Israel, argued that banks moving early would help shape finance’s transition toward open, programmable infrastructure.
Neither remark says a word about what any of this will cost you.
The numbers nobody published
Commercial terms, fees and customer eligibility requirements were all left undisclosed by the two companies.
For anyone weighing whether to actually use the service, that’s everything. Fees determine whether a bank-hosted buy button can compete with an exchange charging a fraction of a percent. Eligibility determines whether this reaches every Pepper user or only a slice of Leumi’s wealth clientele.
Until that information surfaces, what’s on the table is an intention — not a product you can put a price on.
Early 2027 is a long runway
Bitcoin currently trades at $62,553.19, with ether at $1,865.37.
Early 2027 sits far enough ahead that both figures — and the regulatory environment surrounding them — could be unrecognizable by the time the service goes live. Announcing today secures Leumi the first-mover headline in Israel. It delivers customers nothing so far.
Why GK8 is the part worth watching
Bank crypto products tend to live or die on custody, quietly. The trading screen is the straightforward half.
Galaxy’s custody infrastructure, formerly GK8, is what genuinely holds the assets sitting behind that buy button — and it’s the component no bank can paper over with a polished app.
The fact that Leumi signed a distinct agreement for custody instead of bundling it into the trading arrangement hints that both parties view it as a commitment in its own right.
Elsewhere in privacy tech
Zcash’s Tachyon upgrade sets out to scale shielded payments, strengthen quantum readiness, and stress-test whether its funding, security, and governance can hold.
It’s that final clause that stands out. Scaling and quantum resistance are engineering challenges with recognizable contours. Whether funding, security and governance hold together is a test of a different order — and historically it’s the one that has broken privacy projects.
What to do with this now
Leumi customers and Pepper users have nothing to register for and nothing to relocate. Early 2027 leaves well over a year before any of this reaches your account.
The launch date isn’t the thing to track. The fee schedule and eligibility rules are, since those will reveal whether Leumi has built a real alternative to an exchange — or simply a pricier one wearing a familiar logo.
