Yes, the Barbarian really is getting a Geralt skin in Diablo 4. No, you can’t get your hands on it without picking up The Witcher 3 through Battle.net.
CD Projekt and Blizzard unveiled it at BlizzCon 2026, and the condition bolted onto the announcement turned the mood in the room almost immediately. Claiming the cosmetic requires pre-purchasing the Witcher 3 expansion Songs of the Past on Battle.net — or picking it up there once it’s out. For now, wishlisting is the only option available for the expansion.
Translation: nothing for Steam players.
The Battle.net wall is the whole problem
This is the point where the arithmetic falls apart for most players. The Witcher 3 Remastered arrives on Steam as a free upgrade on September 29, 2026, for everyone who already owns the base game. So if you play Diablo 4, already have The Witcher 3 sitting in your Steam library (and honestly, who doesn’t at this point), and you want Songs of the Past, Valve’s storefront is where you’ll be buying it. Purchasing a second copy of a game you own, on a launcher you never open, all to unlock a cosmetic in an entirely different title — that’s a hard pitch.
Players made that clear, and not quietly.
“Not paying for a second copy of a 15-year-old game that most people who would play it probably already own,” one person said on social media. “Thx though Blizzard.”
Someone else took aim at the cosmetic itself. “He looks so bad,” they said of Geralt’s face in the image shown during the panel. “I’m glad tho because I had zero desire to preorder a game in the worst launcher ever just to get this. I really hope they sold it separately in the future.”
Why the Barbarian, specifically
Amelia Korzycka, CD Projekt’s Expert Community and Social Media Manager, joined Level Design Lead Miles Tost as guests on the 30 Years of Battle.net panel where the skin was announced. Tost laid out the thinking behind the crossover — and in fairness, that reasoning stands up considerably better than the storefront strategy does.
“For us creatively, stuff like this is super fun because it puts us as creatives in a position where we have to think, how do we make these worlds collide in a way that gives respect and pays respect to both of the source materials, Diablo and The Witcher in this context?” Tost said.
“So when we look at these kind of things we first try to find the overlap. What makes sense? Diablo of course, talking about classes, looking at the roster, we relatively quickly landed at the Barbarian as the place where we could imagine adding Geralt-inspired content. They’re both masters of physical prowess. They have trained all their lives to become super strong and powerful melee combatants. The Barbarian is capable of wielding multiple weapons at the same time. Geralt doesn’t wield them at the same time, but he does use two swords: the iconic steel for humans and silver for monsters.”
The armor got a breakdown of its own. “And you can see here, for those of you in the know, that this armor is heavily inspired by Geralt’s iconic Kaer Morhen armor. There’s a bit of Barbarian sprinkled on top… you see all the fur. I think you can see here how we’re trying to create collaborations like these in a way that makes sense for both teams and worlds and also fans. I hope you can see here how we have created something that feels right at home in Sanctuary.”
Bad timing, too
Adding to the awkwardness, the reveal arrived just 24 hours after Blizzard confirmed that Diablo 4 is done receiving expansions — hardly the moment you’d choose to introduce a paid crossover cosmetic.
Diablo game director Brent Gibson told PC Gamer: “We’re all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5. We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror.”
The game has been out since June 2023, and Diablo 5 isn’t expected until sometime in 2029. That leaves years of seasonal-only updates ahead, and a portion of the community is reading the Geralt reveal as a preview of what that era will look like.
More Witcher is coming, and more Cyberpunk too
It won’t stop here, either. “This skin, taking Geralt’s style into the hellscapes of Sanctuary, is the first piece of Witcher-inspired content coming to Diablo 4, and more is in the works, coming to Blizzard’s action-RPG in 2027,” CD Projekt said, adding that details will come later.
Traffic flows both ways in this partnership. Battle.net is set to receive Cyberpunk 2077, the Phantom Liberty expansion and the Ultimate Edition before the year is out. Overwatch, meanwhile, is lined up for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Edgerunners 2-themed content in 2027 — scheduled alongside an expanding universe, with the sequel animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiering on Netflix on October 20.
Two studios, no shortage of crossover ambitions, and a single launcher sitting between a whole lot of players and a Barbarian dressed in Kaer Morhen armor.
