The post told players to “Sharpen your skills. Earn permanent upgrades. Survive the next wave.” It ended with a question, “Which challenge are you taking on first?” and the hashtag #UndeadIsUndead.

Reading the challenge names

None of the five challenges has published rules yet. Still, two of them match mechanics already in the game: headshots take zombies down faster in Undead Blocks, and weapon progression has sat on the roadmap for a long while.

The most obvious connection is Weapon Level Up. The whitepaper, updated July 14, 2026, says players gather Green ZBUX, which Survivors can use to level up their Weapon Loadout Digital Assets, trade for Loot Coffins and build what the document describes as lasting equity in their digital assets. Whether the new challenge’s upgrades go through that system isn’t stated in the announcement.

How challenges fit the reward economy

The game’s economy already includes challenges. Per the whitepaper, weekly challenges and tournaments give players a shot at winning Gold ZBUX, the premium in-game currency. Gold ZBUX can be swapped for select cryptocurrencies or used on rare and exclusive items and weapons.

With the Avalanche relaunch, Gold ZBUX rewards were due to come back for holders of Genesis Weapon NFTs. ZBUX doesn’t appear in the new post, and it doesn’t say if any of the five challenges reward Gold or Green ZBUX.

Where this sits on the roadmap

New challenges were pencilled in for Q4 2025 on Wagyu Games’ relaunch roadmap. The same quarter was meant to deliver more character NFTs, a limited Apocalypse Weapon NFT drop, the Extended Neighborhood map and the beginning of work on Genesis and Apocalypse weapon upgrades.

Q1 2026 was set aside for releasing those weapon upgrades, a full mobile launch, battle pass development, an in-game store accepting credit and debit cards and the start of Squads Mobile development. The Q2 2026 list included a possible Squads Mobile launch, the Graveyard map, a battle pass expansion with new NFTs and drops of character clothing and accessory NFTs.

Which of these have actually shipped, the studio hasn’t said publicly.

The switch to Avalanche

Undead Blocks originally launched in 2022 on Ethereum and Immutable. Wagyu Games shifted it to Avalanche for better scalability and performance across the game’s backend and token infrastructure, and the $UNDEAD token was to be bridged across as part of that move.

The relaunch partner was Blackhole, a decentralized exchange that supplied exchange listings, co-marketing and trading competitions. An NFT marketplace, a rental platform, a stake-to-mint system, a Blood Box reward system and a Music Jukebox were also among the planned additions.

For later in 2026, the roadmap lists the Undead Pivot Protocol and Stake-to-Mint platforms, both linked to $UNDEAD utility.

Background

Grant Haseley, the Wagyu Games founder and a former Goldman Sachs analyst, announced the multiplayer zombie FPS for ImmutableX on Feb. 28, 2023. The game takes place in a New York suburb and leans into a retro style, with old-school vehicles, TVs and radios.

At launch it offered Solo, Squads for two to four players, SpeedRun and Massacre modes. Around 2,500 people played daily in early 2023. Over one quarter, more than 100,000 players tried it, and a sponsored tournament in Nashville pulled in more than 7,500 participants chasing a prize pool of over $150,000.

Haseley said back then that the model was sustainable since players earn tokens only when the game is making money, mostly from NFT sales of guns and loot coffins.
