One week into the public alpha
WORLDS opened to the public on Oct. 17. HYTOPIA technical co-founder ArkDev had posted two days before that the alpha would go live within 24 hours.
The team pitched the launch as a fresh start. “In 2021 we started as NFT Worlds. Then we became HYTOPIA. It’s time we go back to our roots,” it wrote, describing WORLDS as “the original NFT Worlds vision, built from the ground up by us. No Minecraft baggage.”
The studio hasn’t said when WORLDS will come out of alpha.
Inside the current build
WORLDS is a crafting and exploration RPG centered on a permanent home world. Gear is crafted and stored at home, and players leave on expeditions to collect resources. Expeditions come from a guide and a caravan, and each one has its own balance of risk and reward.
Players can visit caves, underwater grottos, floating islands, volcanic areas, buried labyrinths, ruined aqueducts and fortresses. Skills include mining, woodcutting, crafting, cooking, alchemy, climbing and exploration.
For combat, there are swords, bows, armor, enchanted equipment and consumable tonics. Players fight creatures, skeletons, golems and bosses.
Some travelers met during expeditions ask for help. If a player helps them, they can settle in that player’s home and supply resources daily. Open trips allow up to four players, and party members can drop in on one another’s homes.
The build also spells out the penalties for quitting an expedition early, and its handling of disconnects and party interactions has improved.
A whitelist linked to a possible mint
If the team goes ahead with a future free mint, early testers could qualify for a whitelist. HYTOPIA has not confirmed that any mint will take place.
The alpha announcement also left out any details on how the TOPIA token fits into WORLDS.
Minecraft add-on to standalone engine
NFT Worlds started in October 2021 as a web3 layer running on Minecraft. In July 2022, Mojang banned blockchain integration in Minecraft, so the project rebranded as HYTOPIA and switched to its own engine. Delphi Digital had put $3 million into the project.
The Worlds NFT collection, sold today as TOPIA Worlds, has since moved from Polygon to Arbitrum.
In its next phase, HYTOPIA built a platform for games from outside developers. The platform alpha came out in early 2025, and AI tools added later let creators build maps and add enemies and scoring in one session.
ArkDev said in September that this strategy had failed and proposed that the team make its own game. That game is WORLDS, and it runs on HYTOPIA’s in-house technology.
The launch post closed the topic with one line: “No Minecraft baggage.”
