Kamurocho has been rebuilt in blocks. RGG Studio (Ryu ga Gotoku Studio) said on Friday that Like a Dragon, the series once called Yakuza, has come to Roblox, the popular game platform and game creation system.
The licensed game, Yakuza Blocks: Like a Dragon, is available now. RGG Studio framed it as something to play with friends: “Grab your crew, Kamurocho is calling. Yakuza Blocks: Like a Dragon is now live on Roblox. Explore, fight, and rise through the ranks together.”
A second announcement repeated almost the same message: “Explore Kamurocho, fight your way up, and rise to the top with your crew.”
The series behind the Roblox game
Toshihiro Nagoshi created the series for PlayStation 2 in 2005. Western releases used the Yakuza name. The first game’s lead was Kazuma Kiryū, a low-ranking Yakuza member, and it took place in Kamurocho, a fictional district modeled on Tokyo’s Kabukicho.
There are nine mainline games so far, along with several spin-offs. A Roblox version is the most surprising thing RGG Studio has announced.
RGG Studio’s other releases
The studio has more going on than Roblox. Last February it released Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties worldwide as one package on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. It combines a remake of Yakuza 3 with Dark Ties, a new standalone game.
Stranger Than Heaven, once codenamed “Project Century,” comes out January 15 on Xbox X|S, PS5 and PC via Steam. It will also be on Game Pass.
Live-action versions
Two live-action options exist for viewers. Ryū ga Gotoku Powered By Nihon Tōitsu (Yakuza Powered by Nihon Tōitsu) is a crossover between the games and the Nihon Tōitsu original video series. All three episodes premiered in Japan on Amazon Prime Video on February 10, and Sega’s YouTube channel streams it with English subtitles.
Like a Dragon: Yakuza (Ryū ga Gotoku ~Beyond the Game~) is a live-action series adapted from the games. Amazon Prime Video started streaming it in October 2024.
