Not once does the latest Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer mention the PS5 or the Nintendo Switch 2. The two trailers that came before it, released in March and June, spelled out every platform the game is coming to.
Omissions like that don’t happen by chance.
The trailer went up on Xbox’s own YouTube channel, and those absent logos hint that, with Asha Sharma now serving as CEO, the company is dialing back its promotion of its games on competing hardware even further.
The Gears of War tell
Reports earlier this summer indicated that Xbox scrapped a PS5 edition of Gears of War: E-Day shortly before the game was revealed. Key art carrying a PS5 logo had already appeared on an Xbox podcast. That logo was subsequently taken off — a sign the decision came fairly late in the day.
Microsoft was also reported to have pulled a Halo: Campaign Evolved trailer from a PlayStation State of Play. Sharma reportedly made that call, and it strained relations between Xbox and PlayStation.
Viewed alongside all of that, the Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer reads less like a slip-up and more like a deliberate play to draw players back inside Xbox's own ecosystem and strengthen the brand there.
Sony went back to a phrase it hadn’t needed in years
Microsoft isn’t alone in reworking how it talks about its games. Reports this year said PlayStation is walking away from PC releases for its high-profile first-party single-player titles, Ghost of Yotei among them.
Over roughly the past five years, most of Sony’s narrative-driven first-party games made their way to PC eventually. That no longer looks like the plan. Meanwhile, the company has revived its “only on PlayStation” branding.
One new PlayStation ad stamps the phrase “PlayStation 5 exclusive” over footage from Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, Astro Bot, Gran Turismo 7, Saros and God of War Laufey. The takeaway for players is that no PC ports are coming down the line. This is the same uncompromising exclusivity Sony leaned on for decades across the PS1, PS2, PS3 and much of the PS4 era.
Xbox still hasn’t drawn a hard line
Where Sony has been unambiguous, Xbox remains noncommittal.
Permanent exclusivity has been promised for exactly two titles: Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution. Beyond that pair, there’s little being said.
Is The Elder Scrolls 6 staying on Xbox? And what becomes of the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters? Xbox hasn’t answered either question, leaving the trailers to speak for the company.
