In Brief:
- Portal, a web3 gaming platform, revealed that Gen8 — its prompt-to-play engine for 2D games — has entered beta, per an Oct. 8 post on X.
- Players type out a game idea, choose a template and spin up a playable build they can keep refining. An open beta window is running Oct. 1-31.
- Of the four Portal 2.0 products, Gen8 is the third to reach users. GameHub, which handles publishing and monetization, still hasn’t shipped.
On Oct. 8, Portal took to X to confirm the beta rollout of Gen8, writing, “We are thrilled to officially announce the Beta launch of our prompt-to-play 2D game engine!”
With Gen8, a written description becomes a playable 2D game. “Describe your game, pick a template, and generate a playable version that you can keep iterating on,” the company explained in the post. The engine can be found at portalgaming.com/gen8, where it displays a beta tag next to Discover, My games, Leaderboard and Top creators sections.

A “Portal Gen8: Open Beta for All” event is listed on the company’s events page, running from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. According to the main site, using the tools comes with rewards attached: generating assets or games earns users Shards, tokens that can later be redeemed for gift cards in the Portal Shop. August and September each hosted game jams featuring a 50,000 Shard prize pool.
Third of four products
Gen8 is the third release on Portal’s roadmap. First unveiled as GameGen on April 18, it debuted when the company rebranded as Portal 2.0 under a “Day 1” banner, laying out four products: Studio, GameRouter, GameGen and GameHub.
The first to ship was Studio, the agent workspace. On it, creators bring in agents from Claude, OpenAI or OpenClaw, give them roles and prompt for characters, tiles and sprites, checking previews before anything is committed to a project. Guided milestones then carry a build toward release, whether that means exporting to an external engine or building on Gen8.
The routing layer, Nexus, followed in late July, going live at nexus.portalgaming.com after being teased since June under its working name, GameRouter. It routes prompts to specialized models for code, sprites and audio through a single API key and one credit balance spanning 2D, 3D, voice, music and NPC tooling. GameHub, the fourth product, has yet to surface.
From 20 testers to open beta
Before opening up more widely, Portal ran a Gen8 Creators Program from Aug. 1-31, picking 20 creators for early access. “We’re selecting 20 creators to get early access, create games alongside us, and directly shape the future of our dev tools,” the company said in an August post on X. Spots were scarce, and Portal decided at its own discretion which applications were accepted or declined.
Portal has framed Gen8’s mission as giving indie teams back the weeks they lose on basic movement, UI and off-the-shelf asset packs just to reach a playable prototype.
A crowded field
The timing is notable: it arrives a day after Google opened Playground, its own experimental prompt-to-play platform, on Oct. 7. Access to creation tools there is being rolled out in batches. Meanwhile, Unity’s Spark is in testing, with a closed beta on the way.
The reset behind it
Gen8 caps off a year of reinvention for Portal. The project began as an interoperability and liquidity layer for web3 gaming, spending two years there before merging with BLIFE Protocol in late 2025. The April relaunch put Benjamin Charbit — a former Ubisoft director who worked on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag — at the helm of the AI-focused rebuild, with Animoca Brands among its backers.
Revenue generated by the AI tools, Portal has said, will fund regular buybacks of the PORTAL token. Early access, advanced tool usage rights and voting rights are what holders have been promised.
On the subject of maturity, the launch page offers just one word. Next to the Gen8 logo sits: beta.
