Anyone who purchased Aliens: Fireteam Elite on Nintendo Switch no longer owns a playable copy. This isn’t a case of multiplayer going dark. The whole thing is gone.

Cold Iron Studios has switched off the servers powering the game’s cloud version on Switch, making good on a notice it issued back in March. Buyers paid $30 for the standard release, while the content-packed “Ultimate” edition ran $60.

None of that money is coming back. The studio has made no refund offer to customers.

The consolation prize costs money

Players caught in the shutdown are reportedly eligible for a discount on the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the game. That’s worth a second look. The compensation for having a purchased game taken away is money off buying that same game again.

Released in 2021, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a co-op third-person shooter built in the world of the Alien movies. It remains obtainable as a physical copy and as a digital purchase on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, plus a download on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Only the Switch build ran entirely from the cloud — precisely the reason it was first to go.

The goodbye message was very polite

Word reached players in March through a pop-up that appeared inside the game. According to reports, the publisher’s message read:

“Thank you for playing our game. We sincerely appreciate your support. The game will be accessible until August 5, 2026, 23:59 JST. After that, you will no longer be able to access the game. We apologize to our loyal customers for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding. We hope you will continue to enjoy our other game titles.”

Now that it’s delisted, paying customers have no way to launch it at all. Not with friends over the internet. Not solo, offline, on their own.

Check the calendar

The timing puts the shutdown just weeks ahead of Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, which arrives August 25. Taking the original off Switch could nudge a few of those players toward buying the follow-up. Draw your own conclusions.

Cold Iron Studios has never disclosed Switch sales figures for the title. Stacked against a physical PlayStation edition and downloads across four other consoles, the cloud-only Switch version was likely the least attractive option available, and the studio may simply have run the numbers and concluded the player base didn’t cover what the servers cost.

Your library is a rental agreement

The pattern repeats, on platform after platform, year after year. Digital downloads offer no real protection either. It doesn’t happen often, but a digital purchase buys a license to play, and licenses can be pulled. Should the storefront you bought from lose its distribution rights, the loss lands on you.

That vanishing-library risk explains the backlash when it was announced that PlayStation titles will stop shipping on physical discs from January 2028. Fewer discs translates to fewer games you can physically own.

Shutdowns like this one have triggered legal action in the past. Those cases went nowhere. What they did manage was to show a great many people how much weight the word “buy” carries on a storefront button.

August 5, 2026, 23:59 JST. The deadline came and went, and somewhere a Switch owner is looking at a $60 icon that leads nowhere.
