Somebody has Ocarina of Time running at 8K inside Unreal Engine 5 right now, and the comment section sitting underneath it has turned into open warfare.
It’s a strange spot for Nintendo’s remake to occupy before a single second of it has actually been played. Almost 30 years removed from the original’s launch, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is once again part of the cultural conversation, and Nintendo's announcement that a full remake is coming landed as a genuinely big moment. What remains unanswered is what exactly they’ve cooked up, and how much of the original’s magic makes it through the trip.
Which is the problem: we know close to nothing. Some visuals glimpsed in the initial teaser are the entirety of it. The safe bet is that Nintendo has a dedicated Direct lined up to properly open the game up for a reveal.
Fans beat Nintendo to the punch
The YouTube channel Digital Dreams makes a habit of showcasing older titles with modernised visuals, frequently rendered in Unreal Engine 5 at 8K resolutions. Ocarina of Time is its latest subject, presented in 8K with reworked lighting and visuals spanning many of the game’s major areas.
The result looks modern, no question. It also sheds a measure of the original’s charm on the way into the new engine, and that is precisely where the fight kicked off. Viewers divided over whether the exercise was worth doing at all, and over whether this is the direction Nintendo itself will go.
No punches pulled in the replies
“I really dislike the lighting. Everything is either too bright or too dark,” read one comment.
A second was more even-handed, though hardly gentler: “Of course, it looks very good compared to the OG Ocarina of Time, but it’s no way near awesome [enough] for an Unreal Engine 5 game.”
A third made no attempt to cushion the blow at all. “I hate to be a hater and i wear no nostalgia glasses, but this ain’t it. And it’s so so so far from what it should be that it’s pointless to even start typing why it ain’t it. Sorry.”
Nintendo is up next, and soon
Release for the official Ocarina of Time remake is pencilled in for later this year, which places a full reveal somewhere around six weeks away as of writing. There isn’t much runway left.
And the fan base has just demonstrated exactly how it reacts when a rendition of Hyrule falls short of the bar. Expectations are going to be sky-high.
