A Foundation game is on the way. It just isn’t the one fans have been requesting.
Apple TV+’s adaptation has lifted Isaac Asimov’s universe to a popularity it never previously enjoyed, with three critically acclaimed seasons already aired and a fourth in production. Momentum like that pushes newcomers to search out anything bearing the name — the original novels, naturally, but games too. And a brand-new Foundation project is arriving shortly to satisfy that appetite.
The name to remember is Foundation: Galactic Frontier.
What you’re actually getting
What Galactic Frontier isn’t is the Mass Effect-style RPG plenty of fans had their hopes pinned on. Instead it’s a large-scale title mixing RTS mechanics with base building, hero collecting and isometric combat.
Your character is an entirely new creation, navigating the schemes of a galaxy in turmoil. Expect a central storyline, iconic faces to encounter, collect and level up, missions to undertake, and RTS engagements fought in space.
There’s a spaceship to construct as well, featuring numerous cabin types that each feed into your journey.
Scale is the selling point here. The goal is to take the political tension, the vast battles and the character drama found in both the show and the books, and channel all of it into an original story you play through instead of watch.
The Steam port, explained
A Steam release is coming soon, although developer FunPlus International AG has yet to attach a specific date to it.
And here’s what matters most if you’re new: this is a port of the mobile game that shares its name. Discovering it only now doesn’t mean you’re arriving years late. All of the new content headed to Galactic Frontier this year will be available to you, the new season included.
The game is completely free-to-play — which of course means microtransactions. Even so, a large share of the content can be enjoyed without spending a cent.
Why a Foundation game makes sense
Foundation has always read like a story engineered for a Mass Effect-esque RPG, or a CRPG along the lines of Rogue Trader. So there’s nothing shocking about a developer taking a swing at turning its universe, characters and story into a game.
The source material suits the format unusually well. There’s a complexity and nuance to Asimov’s universe that serves prestige television and narrative-driven gaming alike, and that overlap is rarer than you might assume.
Should Galactic Frontier perform on Steam while the series continues climbing on Apple TV+, a full RPG could eventually follow. Call that a hope rather than a plan.
Something to do while you wait
Details on Season 4 remain scarce. This hands fans a way to fill the gap, sitting alongside every previously released piece of Foundation content and the many future updates already lined up for Galactic Frontier.
Newcomers get a low-cost door into Asimov’s universe. For those who’ve spent decades with these books, the win looks different: the story has finally grown big enough, and popular enough, to justify building a galaxy around it.
Now somebody just needs to make the RPG.
