DDG hopped on a livestream, offered his view on who Grand Theft Auto VI actually belongs to, and about 24 hours later he was informing his followers that elementary schoolers wanted him dead.
That’s the entire arc. One take, one news cycle, one very online consequence.
Mid-stream, the rapper — born Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr. — made the case that the forthcoming game is owed to the fans who rode with the franchise through its older versions, rather than teenagers who never “experienced bad graphics.” Pure gatekeeping, delivered with the assurance of a man who never saw a reply-guy army of fifth graders coming.
Twenty-four hours after the comment started circulating online, DDG posted on Twitter that Instagram was bringing him “death threats from 10-year-olds.”
The timing was never going to help him
DDG’s comments arrived with the GTA 6 fandom already turned up to maximum, since Rockstar Games had dropped an official preview of the game only days earlier, on Friday, August 28.
Six hours ahead of its YouTube debut, the footage went up exclusively on Netflix as an “extended look” at the game. A Rockstar trailer handed a streaming-service head start is a flex, and the flex landed.
Which meant the audience DDG was writing off had just spent the weekend glued to the very same footage he was, with plenty of pent-up feeling and somewhere to aim it.
What Rockstar actually showed
At the preview’s core are two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, framed as the Bonnie and Clyde duo driving the story. Descriptions of both live on Rockstar’s own website.
Outside of the couple’s dynamic, the footage sells itself on improved graphics, detailed environments, and dynamic shoot-outs and car chases.
There’s also a look at swapping between the two characters at various points. One sequence has Jason lowering Lucia out of a window as the pair flee a drug bust inside a block of apartments.
Leonida, and the city that gave the 2002 game its name
The preview tours a handful of environments across Leonida, the fictional Florida-inspired state where GTA 6 takes place.
It also circles back to Vice City, the fictional Miami-inspired city the 2002 game took its name from. That’s the piece carrying the weight for the players DDG insists have earned this: nostalgia, rebuilt at a fidelity that simply didn’t exist in 2002.
And that, ironically, is the argument against him. The kids being scolded for never enduring bad graphics are about to receive the very same Vice City — only prettier.
The release date, per Rockstar
According to Rockstar Games’ most recent announcement, GTA 6 is expected to arrive on November 19.
That comes straight from the studio — not a leak, not a datamine, not a retailer listing someone screenshotted at 3 a.m. and passed around as gospel.
Same day for everyone. The lifers who ground through the jagged polygons, and the 10-year-olds filling DDG’s DMs with threats they’d need a parent to drive them to carry out.
DDG wanted a velvet rope thrown around a game that moves tens of millions of copies. The 10-year-olds heard him.
