One of these two names was expected. The other is a first.
A new leak suggests both Supergirl and Batwoman will be playable in Injustice 3, a game Warner Bros. still has not announced. Supergirl’s inclusion is no shock: she was a headline character in Injustice 2, which is now nine years old. Batwoman is the surprise pick. If the leak proves accurate, it would mark her first appearance in a mainline Injustice title.
The Batwoman problem
There is a complication. In the canon Injustice comics, Batwoman (Kate Kane) dies. That leaves a few possibilities: another character has picked up the Batwoman identity for Injustice 3, Kate Kane survived after all, or the game simply retcons what the comics established.
Any of those would work. It is a superhero story, and death is rarely permanent in that genre.
A fourth possibility deserves the most attention. Injustice 3 might not pick up the storyline from Injustice and Injustice 2 at all, and could instead be a reboot with an entirely different narrative. NetherRealm has taken that route more than once with its other fighting series, Mortal Kombat, and given nearly ten years will separate Injustice 2 from its successor, a fresh start would not be a major surprise.
The open secret nobody will confirm
Warner Bros. has yet to officially reveal a new Injustice game, despite its existence being widely treated as an open secret. That silence may end soon. Paramount appears close to receiving approval to finalise its $110 billion merger with Warner Bros., which could bring clarity to the publisher’s video game roadmap, a slate known to include Hogwarts Legacy 2 and a new Batman game from Arkham studio Rocksteady.
My prediction: Injustice 3, or whatever name it ships under, is revealed at The Game Awards in December, with a release targeted for in or around April 2027.
Where Mortal Kombat fits
Injustice is not NetherRealm’s only project. Back in May, studio head Ed Boon confirmed another Mortal Kombat game was in the works, which likewise surprised few. That announcement came after 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1 sold 8 million copies, a little over half of the 15 million Mortal Kombat 11 had sold as of 2022. It is possible the new Mortal Kombat arrives after Injustice 3.
NetherRealm’s release pattern explains why fans expected a new Injustice earlier. Injustice: Gods Among Us arrived in 2013, and Injustice 2 followed in 2017. Mortal Kombat 11 came in 2019, and for a time the studio seemed to be alternating between its two franchises. Instead, its next release was another Mortal Kombat, the 2023 soft reboot Mortal Kombat 1.
Fans of the series have been waiting since 2017. Should the leak be accurate, two of the characters they will get are Supergirl and a Batwoman who, according to the comics, should not be alive.
