Casey Bloys refuses to say the words. Everything around them, though, he’ll happily say.
HBO and Max Content’s Chairman and CEO spent Monday night fielding questions at the streamer’s Emmys afterparty about whether the network’s take on Naughty Dog’s zombie series is drawing to a close, and what he offered is roughly the closest a television executive comes to a yes without issuing a press release.
“I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season,” Bloys said.
Season 3 lands in 2027, he confirmed, though he attached no date to it. He stopped short of calling it the last. But the sentence is on the record.
A year of circling the same question
In January, facing the identical question, Bloys answered: “it certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.” Which is the corporate equivalent of gesturing toward someone else and leaving the room.
People duly asked. And in May 2025, Mazin’s response pulled in the exact opposite direction.
“There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season,” Mazin said. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”
The most likely outcome — said 16 months ago. Television has moved a long way since.
The part about Season 2 that goes unmentioned
The Season 3 renewal landed before Season 2 had even reached screens, the sort of bet a network places after a debut season performs the way this one’s did. Critics were on board. The response was near-unanimous.
Season 2 changed the tenor of the discussion. Bella Ramsey’s take on a grown-up Ellie drew pushback from a sizable chunk of the audience, and the structural flaw was hard to look past: half a story stretched to full length.
No internal memo needs to leak for anyone to link a shaky sophomore run to a network that abruptly quits pushing for a fourth.
Naughty Dog isn’t finished with it
This is where the eulogy gets messy. The studio pulled back from its work on the HBO series for Season 3 — but backing off a show is not the same as abandoning the property.
“It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation,” studio head Neil Druckmann said earlier this month. “We’re not done with The Last of Us. There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.”
Listen to the wording. This adaptation. Druckmann has already shifted the series into past tense while Bloys is still performing the diplomatic two-step.
Where the studio’s focus actually sits
Naughty Dog is occupied with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which wrapped performance capture in August. The game then sat out the September 2026 State of Play, and fans made their displeasure heard.
That leaves 2027 as the year the series either lands its ending or runs out of road attempting it. Mazin said one more season couldn’t carry the whole story. His boss has now said one more season is the plan.
One of them has this wrong, and only one of them approves the budget.
