Two separate Mandalorian projects arrive on the very same day this September, and you won’t need a movie ticket for either one.

Mark September 2 on the calendar. That’s the day The Mandalorian and Grogu lands on Disney+, and it’s also the day LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian hits the same platform. One date, one subscription, two wildly different takes on Din Djarin.

The movie needs a second life, and streaming might give it one

The Mandalorian and Grogu was the first Star Wars film in theaters since 2019. Its worldwide run topped out at a little over $340 million, well below what Lucasfilm had in mind.

That math has behaved oddly all through 2026, though. Mortal Kombat II and Masters of the Universe each underperformed studio expectations at the box office, only to lock down steady number one placements on their respective streaming services afterward. Supergirl traced the same path: a soft theatrical showing followed by a strong streaming afterlife.

Lucasfilm is surely counting on September 2 delivering that same turnaround for Din Djarin.

The LEGO special is the sixth of its kind

Revealed at D23 2026 just a month ahead of launch, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian drops the series’ central cast into a fresh, action-heavy adventure played for laughs. It marks the sixth LEGO Star Wars production built for Disney+.

Across the decades, LEGO has been a reliable partner to nearly every major franchise, and Star Wars is no exception. Giving the brick treatment to the sub-franchise that has propped up Disney+ since 2019 is not the sort of scheduling that happens by chance.

Everything downstream of this show is still growing

A rocky third season aside, The Mandalorian is still broadly considered one of the finest Star Wars shows ever made. For seven years it has been almost solely responsible for steering where the franchise focused its Disney+ efforts, and a new lineup of Star Wars films pointing the property back toward the big screen doesn’t undo any of that.

Ahsoka season 2 lands in January 2027, and it simply wouldn’t exist otherwise. Ahsoka made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian season 2, which in turn cleared the way for Thrawn, Hera and Ezra. The second season is expected to set the table for Dave Filoni’s planned Star Wars movie, a film that would include characters from The Mandalorian.

Season 4 already exists on paper

According to Jon Favreau, a script for The Mandalorian season 4 is already written. His attention went to The Mandalorian and Grogu, but a completed screenplay signals that he still has plenty more planned for Din Djarin and his young apprentice.

With Star Wars Celebration 2027 coming up, nobody should be shocked if additional projects that spin out of or lean on this show get announced. In the meantime, block off September 2 — twice.
