Hot on the heels of another Apple TV price hike came the September lineup — and the sequence of those two announcements no longer feels accidental.
Apple TV Originals carry most of the weight this month, and the names attached are heavy: Ryan Reynolds, Kenneth Branagh, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Gary Oldman. Below is what actually deserves your time.
Ryan Reynolds behind enemy lines, Branagh with a soft spot for America
Set at the peak of the Cold War, Mayday is an action comedy. Reynolds takes on Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a cocky U.S. Navy pilot who ends up stuck on the wrong side of the map.
Branagh plays the man who stumbles across him: former KGB operative Nikolai Ustinov, who just so happens to harbor a deep admiration for American culture. The result is an improbable buddy spy film that blends comedy into its action.
A dispatcher takes a call he can’t let go
September’s first fresh Apple TV series runs six parts and adapts Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher. Ian Ridley, an ex-detective played by Patrick Brammall, has never recovered from the disappearance of his daughter Maggie over ten years earlier.
These days Ridley answers calls for the police. When a distressed teenage girl comes through the line, he becomes convinced the voice might be his missing daughter’s.
Brammall may look familiar from Devil Wears Prada 2 this year, where he played the Australian love interest.
Slow Horses is already safe through Season 7
Season 6 of Slow Horses premieres this month, and a seventh season has already been given the green light. Never gotten around to it? There’s no bad time to jump in.
Since 2022, Oldman has effectively stretched his Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy performance across a full series. The most recent Season 6 trailer also confirms the return of Olivia Cooke’s fan favorite character.
McConaughey and Harrelson finally do something with the rumor
For years, the persistent theory has been that McConaughey and Harrelson are secretly related — something neither actor has ever confirmed publicly.
Their answer was to turn it into television. In the comedy Brothers, the pair portray fictionalized versions of themselves, exploring their friendship and the fallout once the possibility that they’re brothers becomes public.
Two episodes land together for the premiere, after which installments roll out weekly on Wednesdays.
What’s already running
Premieres aren’t the full picture this month. Episodes of Ted Lasso Season 4, Dark Matter Season 2 and Women in Blue keep arriving on Apple TV.
Friday also delivers the Silo Season 3 finale, laying the groundwork for the sci-fi show’s concluding season in 2027.
