Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — both machines, on the same date. Rockstar has stated plainly that these are its two launch platforms, with no exclusivity arrangement and no timed window tilted toward one manufacturer.

The rest of you — anyone weighing a fresh console purchase solely because of a Rockstar release date — face a call that, in truth, has very little to do with GTA 6.
The game itself settles nothing
A PC version doesn’t exist yet. Based on how GTA 5 rolled out, one is anticipated somewhere in the 12 to 18 month range after launch, but Rockstar has made no such announcement. Backwards compatible ports aren’t happening either.
Under the hood, both consoles are built on the same AMD Zen 2/RDNA2 platform, and this is a Rockstar title tuned for each of them. Any daylight between the two versions should amount to minor variations in resolution and framerate — the sort of thing that disappears once you’re sitting on the couch.
So set the spec sheet aside. What breaks the tie is everything that comes after the credits roll.
Sony brings the games, Microsoft brings the buffet
Here is where the two platforms actually part ways. The PS5’s strongest selling point is Sony’s first party slate: God of War Ragnarök, Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Yotei, with God of War: Laufey and Marvel’s still on the way.
Microsoft’s exclusive roster, by contrast, has thinned out visibly, and some of its former flagship titles now sit on PlayStation storefronts. The case for buying an Xbox because of its exclusives simply doesn’t stand up anymore.
Redmond’s answer is subscription value instead. For a single monthly fee, Game Pass Ultimate hands you a rotating catalogue that includes first party releases on day one alongside a hefty chunk of third-party output. If your tastes run wide rather than deep — if sampling 40 games appeals more than owning four — that arithmetic is tough to dispute.
What the numbers say versus what your TV shows
On teraflops and memory bandwidth, the Series X takes it. That was the story back in 2020.
Reality caught up years ago: Sony’s quicker storage drive and higher GPU clock rate erased most of that advantage. By 2026, load times, resolutions and frame rates cluster tightly together across most multiplatform releases, and there’s little reason to think GTA 6 breaks the pattern.
Then you have the DualSense. Developers put its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to more consistent and more considered use than they do the Xbox pad’s traditional rumble motors. Rockstar made a point of using those features in the PS5 re-release of GTA 5, which suggests the same approach this time around. It’s a soft factor, granted — but for anyone genuinely torn, it nudges the scales.
In India, the spec sheet barely matters
Here the deciding factor is availability. Stock shortages have dogged the Xbox Series X in India for years, and Microsoft has released neither the Digital Only Series X nor the 2TB edition in the country. Xbox shoppers there face a narrower range of choices than a five-year-old console ought to present.
Sony’s record isn’t perfect either. The PS5 Pro has never come to India, meaning the future-proof tier of its lineup is simply unavailable.
Prices have shifted too, and not to your benefit. Following Sony’s global console price increase in 2026, the PS5 disc edition carries an Indian MRP of ₹54,990, though festive events such as Amazon Great Indian Festival and Flipkart Big Billion Days drag the street price down to ₹49,990. The Digital Edition is listed at ₹44,990, while the Xbox Series X sits somewhere between ₹50,000 and ₹56,000.
If day-one GTA 6 is the only thing on your mind, the two boxes are interchangeable. What you’re really choosing between is the years that bracket that release date — and which console you can realistically get hold of.
The PS5 is something you can pick up in a shop today, or order online tonight. In India, the Xbox Series X is something you go hunting for.
