Nintendo has now spelled out the Zelda Direct’s exact length, its start time and a broad sense of what it contains — a level of detail the company rarely shares ahead of time.
The showcase goes live on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 7 am PT/10 am ET, which means an early wake-up for viewers in the States. That date and time were already set, but the fresh post — shared on X and on Nintendo’s official website — tacks on the runtime along with a nudge toward the sorts of announcements in store.
Why the timing was never a surprise
With the Ocarina of Time remake only months away, a Legend of Zelda Direct was about as predictable a move as Nintendo had available. Fans had anticipated it for so long that the rumour mill had already run its full course: sensible predictions up front (gameplay from the remake), followed by the wilder theories bouncing around online.
There’s now an official rundown to measure all that speculation against — useful if you prefer heading into a showcase with some idea of what’s actually on the docket. That goes double if you’ve been holding out for word on the Zelda movie or the games.
The Pokemon precedent is the tell
Predictions for September’s Nintendo Direct have stacked up: fresh game reveals, DLC, and plenty more. The bulk of them revolve around Zelda, which is hardly a stretch.
Consider how Nintendo handled Pokemon’s 30th anniversary. An entirely new mainline entry. Mountains of new merchandise. Updates rolled out to existing titles. A round number was treated as an excuse to clear out the whole cupboard.
Zelda’s 40th ought to take a similar form, beginning with the Ocarina of Time remake and potentially extending to an entirely new game.
What’s plausible, and what’s me guessing
The most probable lineup: a Legend of Zelda movie trailer, a substantial gameplay breakdown for Ocarina of Time, and brief glimpses at merch drops.
Personally, I’d wager on more of the older Zelda titles arriving natively on Nintendo Switch, mirroring what happened for Pokemon’s 30th. That’s guesswork, though, and I’d sooner flag it as such than pass it off as anything firmer.
Zelda’s first significant 40th anniversary release is already out in the wild. Once the Direct wraps, more will probably follow.
Nintendo could have said more
Specifics would have gone down better with fans. Which releases are getting airtime. How much Ocarina of Time is actually being shown. Nintendo kept all of that under wraps.
That said, the company isn’t usually stingy once it does start showing a game off. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave was recently handed a whole Direct of its own. Anticipate a reasonably detailed look at the remake, plus whatever else Nintendo has waiting in the wings.
