Rockstar hasn’t lost the ability to cut a gameplay trailer. The studio simply concluded that the game was too big to squeeze into one.
That’s the takeaway from remarks by Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, explaining why Grand Theft Auto 6 arrived as an Extended Look rather than the narrated gameplay reveal most people had already circled on the calendar.
Slightly surreal, but the Extended Look is now several weeks in the rear-view mirror. Debuting it on Netflix was unusual enough on its own, and the entire rollout marked a break from a studio that normally unveils things on its own schedule and in its own format.
Thirteen years of doing it the other way
Look back at the build-up to GTA 5 and the blueprint is right there: a narrated gameplay trailer, edited within an inch of its life, the sort of thing fans have spent the 13 years since launch waxing nostalgic over. The same playbook came out again for Red Dead Redemption 2.
Which made the expectation easy to form. Two out of two — surely a third.
It never materialized, and according to Nelson, the reason is that putting GTA 6 on display is “extremely tough.”
The comment surfaced on a podcast, not in a press release
Twitter user videotech traced the origin. Andy Cortez of Kinda Funny was among the handful of people given a GTA 6 preview and direct access to Nelson, and during Kinda Funny’s video preview of the game, Cortez passed along what Nelson had told him.
The preview itself landed a few weeks back. It’s only now made the rounds again.
One caveat to hold onto: this is a secondhand retelling from a hands-on preview rather than something Rockstar has issued in its own voice. Nelson’s logic gets to you via Cortez, which isn’t the same as a company blog post — though it is roughly the closest anyone outside the studio can currently get.
The last occasion on which Rockstar guided players through a Grand Theft Auto using a narrator and a curated gameplay edit was 2013. What you got this time was a Netflix premiere and a co-studio head telling a podcaster that the game is “extremely tough” to show off.
