Twenty minutes of a Nintendo Direct, all of it pointed at a single game — that’s what Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is getting on Tuesday.
Nintendo has confirmed a Direct devoted exclusively to the Switch 2 title. The broadcast goes live Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 7 a.m. PDT / 10 a.m. EDT on the company’s YouTube channel, and the deep dive is expected to last around 20 minutes, according to Nintendo.
Fortune’s Weave is the latest chapter in a tactical role-playing franchise now 36 years old. Revealed last September as a Switch 2 exclusive, it launches Sept. 17.
Four heroes, four reasons to fight
In Nintendo’s words, the game is “an intertwining story of strength and steel alongside four new heroes: Cai, a young boy determined to save his imprisoned father; Dietrich, a swordsman ever on the hunt for a stronger foe; Theodora, a queen seeking to fulfill the long-held dream of her homeland; and Leda, a musician with her sights set on revenge.”
All four carry their own ambitions and follow their own narrative threads. The thing that binds them is The Dagsion Heroic Games, an event that seems to pit warriors against one another in a Colosseum-style arena.
The reward justifies the beating. The victor has a wish granted by the Divine Sovereign, the godlike host of the games.
The city between the fights
There’s more to it than fighting. Nintendo says that between bouts, players can wander the capital city of Dagsion, pick up new techniques at the training grounds, deepen bonds to bring fresh allies on board, and venture beyond the city walls to pick up extra experience.
Anyone who sank real hours into 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses will recognise that shape immediately — and not by coincidence. Fortune’s Weave looks to be a prequel to Three Houses, with Dagda acting as the home of several characters from that game.
So: Tuesday morning, 20 minutes, a single game, and a story that loops back to the Fire Emblem people still haven’t stopped debating.
