A KALLAX shelf can now join your Skyrim party. It speaks. The voice is Matt Berry’s.
IKEA has released an official, free mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, with the furniture giant transforming one of its most recognizable products into a recruitable companion you haul across Tamriel. It goes by KALLAX STORAGEBORN. The thing is fully voiced, and that voice belongs to Berry, known for What We Do in the Shadows.
This was on nobody’s list.
The joke starts with your inventory screen
Every Skyrim player knows the moment. A few hours into vacuuming up weapons, armor and worthless trinkets, the Dragonborn starts shuffling forward like someone dragging a washing machine up a flight of stairs.
Encumbrance. The game’s oldest complaint.
IKEA’s solution is, naturally, more storage space.
You have to build it yourself, obviously
Becoming overencumbered triggers a new quest, which sends you to an abandoned dungeon to scavenge the parts required to assemble the KALLAX. Not even Skyrim spares you from IKEA assembly.
Once the build is complete, the shelf comes to life. It sticks around as a permanent companion with an enormous carrying capacity — which is, of course, the entire point.
There’s a Clutter Golem, and yes, a Meatball Helmet
This isn’t one gag stretched to breaking point. The mod also packs in another questline, two themed dungeons, a boss encounter with the Clutter Golem, and fresh gear such as the Meatball Helmet and the Allenblade.
There’s also a Thu’um-style power that calls KALLAX to your side no matter where you’re standing. A shout, for a bookshelf.
Where to get it
You can grab KALLAX STORAGEBORN for free via Bethesda Creations for Skyrim Special Edition on PC and Xbox. According to IKEA, a PlayStation release is coming soon.
IKEA collaborated with Bethesda directly here, and that’s the detail that elevates the whole thing from fan project to something far odder.
Even IKEA knows how this sounds
One of the questions in the official FAQ is “Is this real?”
It is. A flat-pack shelf will now shout back at you in Matt Berry’s voice, and your missing Allen key is sitting in an abandoned dungeon somewhere.
